Taking Better Blog Photos: Lighting (& announcement)

Better Lighting

Disclosure: If you click a link below, I may receive a small commission.

If you have caught my last two weeks of Blog Tip Tuesday, you can read about the backdrops I use for photos and the props I have. Today’s post is all about taking better blog photos with good lighting! Lighting is a huge problem for me when I am trying to take better blog photos, because our house majorly lacks natural light. The only place in the house to take good natural light photos is the bay window in the front of the house. While I don’t mind taking photos there, most of the time, there isn’t enough space. Because of the absence of natural light, I have had to figure out new methods of taking photos.

I have come to realize that I will likely never post a step-by-step recipe with photos because there is just no avoiding the yellow kitchen we have. The walls are avocado green (which I love) but the wood is just not a pretty color and makes the lighting even worse. Sorry if you ever wanted to see my kitchen. For example, the photos I took in my post about almond french toast were all in front of the door because that was the only place that had good lighting when I was making the recipe. But most of the time, because of the lack of light, I try to take all of my photos on the front or back porch. This becomes a problem when it is rainy, windy, or dark outside though.

With all of those possible problems,  I have found out how to make most of the other areas of the house work. With some help from a few awesome products, I can take photos of almost anything, wherever and whenever I need to (but still not in the kitchen, womp womp).

Lightbulb

The best product I have found are natural light lightbulbs. Since my office has no access to natural light whatsoever, these have been a lifesaver. They are even energy efficient and will last about 3 years. I wouldn’t say they look exactly like natural light, but they are bright and white, not blue or yellow. They are well worth the money, and I am slowly putting them in every room of our house. They have helped immensely with the lighting of my photos, even in the middle of the night!

Another big help has been this reflector. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was, and with so many options. It came with a small carrying case, and I somehow never have problems fitting it back into the case. I use this to deflect shadows, soften light, and absorb light when it’s too bright. It has been a help more times than you can imagine, and I don’t know how I lived without it for so long!

I have also heard great things about this portable LED light for taking photos in low-light. I haven’t needed to use it yet, but others reported that it works really well for evening pictures. I’ll check back once I have used it myself!

Do you use any specific items to take better photos in rough lighting?

ALSO!

I never thought to have a portable LED light when taking blog pictures! Definitely a great idea when there isn’t enough natural light.
And I hear you on the kitchen lighting! I think that the granite in our kitchen along with the tile just makes everything in our kitchen have a yellowish tint.
