Disney Wish Vs Disney Dream: Which Ship For Your Family?

Having sailed on several cruise lines, I can safely say, no one does it like the Disney cruise line sailing experience! With top-tier service, Broadway production entertainment, an incredible kids club and more, I can guarantee that a Disney cruise is ideal for nearly every family.

However, once you go Disney, you may not want to go back to other major cruise lines. 

Let’s chat about two of my favorite ships, both of which mainly sail out of Florida departure ports, the Disney Wish vs Disney Dream ships.

Embarking on a Disney Cruise is a magical experience, but with multiple ships in the Disney Cruise Ships fleet, choosing the right one can be a challenge. Two of the most popular ships in the Disney Fleet are the Disney Wish vs Disney Dream. Both offer incredible experiences, but they have distinct differences that can make one a better fit for your family. In this guide, we will break down every key aspect of these ships, helping you determine the Best Disney Cruise for your vacation.

Spoiler alert, I have a semi-unpopular opinion about which one is my favorite, but before I give you those details, I want to share all the ins-and-outs about both ships in order to help you make the choice for your vacation.

Disney Wish vs Disney Dream Comparison 

Ship Size and Layout

When comparing Disney Wish vs Disney Dream, size matters and can make a big impact on your experience. 

The Disney Dream is part of the Dream-class ships, launched in 2011, with a gross tonnage of 130,000 GT and capacity for 4,000 passengers. The layout of the Disney Dream has a classic Disney feel. There are specific areas for things like the adults only restaurants, the kids club is located in the middle of the ship as far as location between the forward and aft (though it is more forward), as well as between the floors, on floor 5. 

The Disney Wish, launched in 2022, is part of the Wish-class, slightly larger at 144,000 GT but with a similar passenger capacity. The layout of the Disney Wish features more modern and spacious designs. The Wish feels more spread out between where you wanted to go. There are a few things within the same vicinity, like the theatres, but other areas, like the lounges and bars, were more spread apart around the ship. 

When considering which ship is better for you, I would consider how crowded the pool deck and other activities will be. The big difference here is that there are the same number of people on the ship, but the Wish is larger in footprint. 

When you first board the ship on embarkation day, I recommend checking out the open house hours of all of the kids club locations to see what they have to offer each age group. 

The Staterooms

While many people won’t say that your room makes much of a difference, I do find that it’s helpful to have specific sized rooms when sailing as it’s nice to have room to put all the things, from Minnie Ears to Bubble Wands. There are various styles on both ships, so there are a lot of details about the room types and themes. 

Disney Dream Staterooms

The Disney Dream offers a variety of staterooms, ranging from standard inside rooms to lavish concierge suites. The design is inspired by classic Disney elegance, featuring Art Deco elements and subtle nods to beloved Disney characters.

1. Inside Staterooms

• Standard Inside Stateroom – Features a “Magical Porthole”, displaying real-time views with Disney character animations.
• Deluxe Inside Stateroom – Slightly larger with more space for families.

2. Oceanview Staterooms

• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom – Offers a large porthole with an ocean view.
• Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom – Larger than the standard oceanview, with additional space for families.

3. Verandah Staterooms

• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Private balcony, elegant nautical decor.
• Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Larger verandah room with more space for families.

4. Concierge Staterooms & Suites

• Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Premium decor and concierge perks.
• Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah – Separate bedroom, upscale furnishings, and concierge access.
• Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah – The most luxurious suite onboard, with a large verandah, private whirlpool tub, and an elegant design inspired by classic Disney films.

Themes on Disney Dream Staterooms:

• Classic Nautical Elegance – Inspired by the golden age of ocean liners, featuring rich wood tones, Art Deco influences, and subtle Disney details.
• Hidden Disney Magic – Each room has tasteful Disney accents, such as Cinderella’s carriage in the carpet or Mickey Mouse details in the furniture.

Disney Wish Staterooms

The Disney Wish introduced a more immersive, fairytale-inspired stateroom design, with themes based on beloved Disney movies. The staterooms feel modern, luxurious, and filled with magical touches.

1. Inside Staterooms

• Standard Inside Stateroom – Cozy, modern design with fairytale-inspired decor.
• Deluxe Inside Stateroom – A bit more spacious, with a dreamy Disney atmosphere.

2. Oceanview Staterooms

• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom – Features one or two large portholes with a dreamy ocean view.
• Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom – Extra space and larger portholes, perfect for families.

3. Verandah Staterooms

• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Private balcony with a stylish, storybook-inspired design.

4. Concierge Staterooms & Suites

• Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah – A larger suite with separate living and sleeping areas. 
• The theming is Rapunzel- and it’s stunning! 
• Concierge 2-Story Royal Suite with Verandah – The most luxurious suite, spanning two floors, featuring a grand spiral staircase and opulent details. These rooms are themed like Sleeping Beauty. 
• Concierge Wish Tower Suite – The first-ever suite inside a cruise ship’s funnel, themed after Moana, with breathtaking ocean views and a private elevator.

Themes on Disney Wish Staterooms:

• Frozen – The Frozen theme rooms feature artwork with Anna and Elsa and subtle nods towards supporting characters. 
• Cinderella Theme – Many rooms feature elegant nods to Cinderella, with dreamy pastel colors and delicate designs.
• Sleeping Beauty Theme – Some staterooms have artwork and details inspired by Aurora and her enchanted fairytale.
• The Little Mermaid Theme – Oceanview and verandah staterooms may feature The Little Mermaid with aquatic-themed decor.
• Moana Theme (Exclusive to the Wish Tower Suite) – Polynesian-inspired luxury design with references to Moana and Te Fiti.

Key Differences Between Disney Dream and Disney Wish Staterooms 

• Disney Dream has a more classic, Art Deco style, while Disney Wish has a storybook, fairytale-inspired design.
• Disney Wish staterooms incorporate more Disney theming with characters and movie-inspired decor.
• Disney Wish has the Wish Tower Suite, a one-of-a-kind luxury suite inside the ship’s funnel.
• Both ships offer concierge rooms with luxury amenities, but Disney Wish has more variety in its suite options.

If you’re deciding between the Disney Wish vs Disney Dream, choosing based on stateroom design can make a big difference in your experience. If you love classic elegance, the Disney Dream is a great choice. If you prefer immersive fairytale magic, the Disney Wish may be the better option.

The Kids Clubs

A highlight of any Disney Cruise Ships experience is the amazing kids’ clubs. Both ships have top-tier youth programs, but with a few key differences. 

On both ships you will find:

• it’s a small world nursery can be reserved in advance for kids ages 6 months to 3 years. It is an additional fee, usually around $9 per hour. 
• Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for kids 3-12
• Edge for tweens 11-14
• Vibe for teens 14-17. Popular themes include Star Wars and Toy Story.

• Disney Dream: You enter the kids club from the 5th floor at a check in desk. The kids areas are well themed with rooms designed like Star Wars, Toy Story and more. Characters like Woody visit throughout the day. 
• Disney Wish: A more electronically interactive kids club is on the Wish-class ships. With an all-new Imagineering Lab, a Marvel Super Hero Academy, and a reimagined Star Wars Cargo Bay, as well as immersive experiences that elevate the experience. One of the coolest areas of the kids club was the Fairytale Hall where you will find Belle’s library, Rapunzel’s Tower, and a Frozen hall. Characters like Rapunzel, Goofy and Captain Jack Sparrow visit throughout the day. 
  • There is a SLIDE from the Grand Hall into the kids club- adults can try it during open house!

Both ships have an incredible kids club experience. It was often difficult to get our daughter to join us for dinner, or hang out with us by the pool, because she was always having a great time in the kids club. 

The Pools and Water Activities

Both ships offer multiple pools and splash areas, but they differ in design and offerings. Both pools offer lifejackets so feel free to leave yours at home! 

• Disney Dream
  • For the whole family
    • Mickey’s Pool and Donald’s Pool are on the Lido deck (aka the pool deck). 
    • Nemo’s Reef splashpad area is under cover next to the main pool deck. 
    • Funnel Puddle is a wading pool on deck 12 where adults can lounge while kids play in water that is only a few inches deep. 
    • Mickey’s Slide on the main pool deck. 
    • Whirlpools are located on the lido deck towards each side of the ship. 
    • AquaDuck is a thrilling water coaster over the pool deck and through the stacks. 
  • For the adults 
    • Satellite Falls is a wading pool area on the adults-only deck. 
    • Quiet Cove Pool with a wading section and a pool. There is seating along the edge of the pool in almost all areas, as well as a poolside bar where you can have your toes in the water as you order another frozen cocktail. 

• Disney Wish
  • For the whole family 
    • Mickey’s Pool & Minnie’s Pool are the two main pools on the pool deck. 
    • Daisy’s Pool and Pluto’s pool are small wading pools in between the levels of pools. 
    • Donald’s Pool and Goofy’s Pool are a few steps above the main pool deck, still overlooking the Funnel Vision screen. AquaMouse, Disney’s first-ever attraction at sea, offering a water ride with a storyline.
    • Chip n’ Dale’s pool on deck 12 is a smaller wading pool. 
    • Toy Story Splash Zone is a cute area where younger kids can splash around. 
    • Trixie’s Falls is a small waterfall into a wading pool. 
    • Slide-a-saurus rex water slide. 
  • For the adults
    • Quiet Cove Pool, while it has the same name as the adults only section on other ships, it’s a very different style in my opinion. This pool area is located at the back of the ship, with a nearly infinity style pool, whirlpools and a wading section with seating. There is still a bar, though it is out of the water and closer to seating. 

Both ships also have a spa section with whirlpools as well as a concierge section with their own private pool. 

The Onboard Activities 

There is much fun to be had outside of the pools and water-related activities on the ship. From the Hero Zone to participating in the hosted events by the amazing cast members, there is almost always something available to do. 

You will get many of the same onboard experiences when it comes to games throughout the cruise, like Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Trivia, games like Name That Tune and Quest, Silent Disco (A MUST!), Karaoke, etc. 

• Disney Dream
  • Games: Goofy’s Sports deck offers mini golf, basketball, tennis and more. 
  • Midship Detective Agency: This self-guided scavenger hunt lets guests solve mysteries featuring beloved Disney characters.
• Disney Wish
  • Disney Uncharted: On the Disney Wish, the traditional detective game was replaced with Disney Uncharted Adventure, a high-tech, interactive scavenger hunt.
  • A brand-new feature exclusive to the Disney Wish, the Hero Zone is an action-packed sports and recreation area designed for family-friendly competition.
    • A full-sized basketball court that can also be used for soccer, volleyball, and other games.
    • Tabletop games, including air hockey and foosball.
    • The Incredi-Games, a large inflatable obstacle course inspired by The Incredibles, featuring slides, climbing walls, and challenges for both kids and adults.
    • Scheduled sports and game events, where families can compete in fun challenges together.
  • Grand hall chandelier show at midnight. If you happen to be awake late one night, I suggest heading to the grand hall to see the cute and quick light show.

Included Dining Experiences & Restaurants

Dining is a key part of any Best Disney Cruise experience. Both ships offer rotational dining for the main dining room food options, but with different themes. Rotational dining is where you go for your main dining room experiences for dinner service each night. You will start at a specific restaurant and then rotate through them all, with the same crew members serving you each night. 

The restaurant experiences are unique to each ship depending on which of the main dining rooms you are in each night. 

• Disney Dream
  • Enchanted Garden – is a garden themed dining room. 
  • Animator’s Palate – an animation themed dining room, where you will have interactive experiences with Crush throughout your dinner. 
  • Royal Palace – A beautiful dining room experience. 
• Disney Wish
  • 1923 – a Hollywood-themed restaurant. 
  • Worlds of Marvel – a Marvel-themed experience where you interact within your table as well as on the screens around the restaurant, with a special visit from your neighborhood Spiderman. 
  • Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure – where it’s dinner and a show with the whole gang from Frozen! 

If you are looking for quick-service dining options, you have a few choices throughout the day. 

• Buffet: the buffet is always available for breakfast and lunch. The Disney Dream has Cabanas and the Wish has Marceline Market, they serve similar options, including crab legs!

    • Fillmore’s Favorite

Both ships offer adults-only specialty dining at an additional cost.

• Disney Dream
  • Palo – Italian fine dining (adults-only) side note, does anyone else think “Sing it to me, Palo” every time they see “Palo”?! 
  • Remy – French gourmet cuisine (adults-only)
• Disney Wish
  • Palo Steakhouse – A steakhouse with Italian influences. (adults-only)
  • Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement – An ultra-fine dining experience. (adults-only)
  • Olaf’s Royal Picnic – have a picnic with Olaf, which is fun for the whole family! 

Cafes, Bars and Lounges

Adults looking to relax will find distinct options on both ships.

  • Vista Cafe – coffee bar in the grand atrium 
• Disney Wish

Bars & Lounges 

• Disney Dream – something I really enjoy about this class of Disney cruise ships is that they have happy hours! Each bar rotates and has an hour throughout the day when drinks are discounted.
  • Skyline – a smaller cocktail bar with beautiful “views” of the city 
  • Pink: Wine & Champagne Bar – a very cute wine bar, ask for a sommelier glass! 
  • District Lounge – piano bar with nightly entertainment 
  • Pub 687 – sports style bar 
  • Meridian – cocktail lounge between Remy & Palo 
  • Bon Voyage – bar within the grand Atrium 
  • Currents – outdoor bar

• Disney Wish
  • Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge – offering an intergalactic cocktail experience. Highly recommend! 
  • The Rose – an elegant bar near Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté with seriously incredible drinks, all served in a special way
  • Keg & Compass – sports bar vibe in this pub
  • Nightingale’s – piano bar with nightly entertainment and delicious champagne cocktails 
  • The Bayou – an outdoor, bayou vibe at this lounge space
  • Hook’s Barbery – pop in between 5pm and 9pm for a pre-dinner cocktail or a night cap. This is a not-so-secret speakeasy though, so you won’t see it on the app! 
  • Currents – outdoor bar

If you enjoy a good cocktail experience, you should look into booking one of the beverage experiences in advance! We absolutely love the mixology class! 

I also recommend asking what the drink of the day is each day in order to save a bit of money. And as mentioned, on the dream class ships, ask about happy hour! 

Candy & Ice Cream Shops

While soft serve ice cream is free on both ships throughout the day, there are also additional locations for paid sweet treats. 

• Disney Dream
  • Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats – candy, gelato and more!
  • Frozone Treats – frozen options for everyone
• Disney Wish
  • Inside Out: Joys Sweets – ice cream scoops, candy and various desserts 
  • Wheezy’s Feezies – frozen treats and drinks 

Spas and Spa Passes

The onboard spas provide ultimate relaxation:

• Disney Dream
  • ​Features Senses Spa with Rainforest Room passes available.
• Disney Wish
  • Introduces an enhanced spa experience with outdoor relaxation spaces and expanded Rainforest Room features.

Adults-Only Areas

Both ships offer exclusive adult retreats. 

• Disney Dream
  • As mentioned above, there is a separate adults only pool area and well as The District which includes various bars. We really enjoyed this space!

• Disney Wish
  • The Disney wish has a seemingly smaller adults-only area inside as the bars are spread out around the ship. The quiet Cove area seems a bit tighter as well, but it has technically been redesigned for better relaxation, and a more serene ambiance.

Onboard Themes

Each ship has its own unique themes. The theming on the Dream is more sub-dued but the themeing on the Wish is weaved throughout the entire ship!

• Disney Dream
  • Classic Disney elegance with touches of Art Deco. You will also find most of the speciality sailing experiences on the Dream, so don’t be surprised to see some Marvel Day at Sea signage. 
• Disney Wish
  • A fairytale-inspired theme featuring Cinderella as the focal point, as it’s known as the “castle at sea”. It truly is a beautiful ship because of these details. 

Want to have the full Disney experience? I highly recommend looking into a Land and Sea trip where you start or end at Disney World with a Disney cruise added on. This is a great way to experience the parks and a cruise all during the same vacation!
Everybody needs a dose of Magic Kingdom or Epcot in their life! 

Entertainment

Both ships offer Broadway-style shows and deck parties:

• Disney Dream
  • Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre: It features “Beauty and the Beast,” which is basically directly from Broadway and a beautiful show, and “The Golden Mickeys,” which is an original production for the ship. Disney’s Believe is another unique show to see while on the ship. 
  • Deck shows: Sailing Away Deck Party to kick off your Disney cruise line vacation, and the “Pirates in the Caribbean” Deck Party, which is a fun interactive experience with some of the classic characters, plus a few fun surprises. 

• Disney Wish
  • Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre: Introduces “Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular” which is a Broadway style show (but don’t tell anyone- it wasn’t my favorite), “The Little Mermaid”, and the “Disney Seas The Adventure” show which is a great way to kick off the cruise! 
  • Deck Shows: Sail Away Celebration is a great show with all of the classic Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy, as well as the Princesses like Cinderella, Belle and Moana. Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party & fireworks (in my opinion, you can skip the show and watch the fireworks from one of the other decks)

Movie Theaters on Disney Dream & Disney Wish

Both the Disney Dream and Disney Wish feature dedicated movie theaters showcasing classic Disney films, Pixar, Marvel, and even first-run Disney releases. This means, if you are onboard the day a new Walt Disney Studios movie is released to theaters, you can also catch it on the ship that same day! 

Disney Dream Theaters:

1. Walt Disney Theatre – A grand Broadway-style theater that also screens big Disney movies in a cinematic setting.
2. Buena Vista Theatre – A classic Hollywood-style movie theater playing Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films.

Disney Wish Theaters:

1. Walt Disney Theater – A lavish fairytale-inspired theater featuring Broadway-style shows and movie screenings.
2. Luna Lounge – A multi-use entertainment venue that sometimes plays family-friendly films and hosts live performances.
3. Cinemas: Wonderland & Never Land Theaters
   • Wonderland Theatre – A Fantasia-inspired movie theater.
   • Never Land Theatre – A Peter Pan-inspired cinema, offering a cozy, immersive setting for Disney films.

Both ships ensure that guests can catch up on their favorite Disney movies at sea, whether it’s a classic or a newly released film.

Other Things To Note 

• Shopping: While onboard, you can visit Mickey’s Mainsail to buy Disney cruise-specific merchandise and some Disney classics. You will also find other shops like jewelry stores, boutique shopping experiences and a few others. 
• Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique: During this boutique experience on board, your child can be transformed into a princess, prince, captain, or pirate. It is available on all ships. 
• Salon Experiences: Get your hair done at the Untangled Salon or Hook’s Barbery on the Disney Wish.   

Which Disney Cruise Ship is Best for Your Family?

When deciding between Disney Wish vs Disney Dream, consider your family’s preferences:

• Choose Disney Dream if you prefer a more classic Disney experience with the beloved AquaDuck water coaster and familiar dining experiences.
• Choose Disney Wish if you want a newer ship with updated kids’ clubs, an immersive dining experience, and more pools.

Both ships offer unforgettable experiences, but by evaluating their differences, you can select the Best Disney Cruise for your family’s magical adventure! 

Speciality Cruises 

• Marvel Day At Sea – You will spend a day fully immersed in the Marvel scene while sailing. Meet iconic characters, have a specialty meal and more. This event is specific to the Disney Dream. 
• New Year’s Eve – the Disney Dream, Magic, Fantasy and Wonder all have celebrations for NYE on board. 
• Thanksgiving at Sea – on all Disney ships 
• Halloween on the High Seas – Celebrate Halloween during September and October sailings on the Disney Dream and the Disney Wish. 
• Very Merrytime cruises – celebrate the holidays on the high seas on select Disney cruise ships, including the Wish and Dream.

Disney Cruise Line is expanding its fleet with a completely new ship class, designed for International markets.

• Passenger Capacity: Approx. 6,000 guests
• Key Features:
  • Being built for an international market.
  • Will be the largest ship in the Disney fleet when completed.

Disney’s Future Cruise Plans

• Disney has announced a third Wish-Class ship, the Disney Destiny, which set to sail in 2025.
• The Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, a new private destination in the Bahamas, opened in June 2024.
• It’s been announced that the next class of ships will be smaller in size compared to the Wish. 

Choosing the Best Disney Cruise Ship for You

• If you want a classic, smaller ship experience → Disney Magic or Disney Wonder.
• If you want a modern, mid-sized Disney Cruise with a water coaster → Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy.
• If you want the newest and most advanced ship with themed dining and attractions → Disney Wish or Disney Treasure.

My Opinion

I LOVE the Disney cruise experience. We were sold from our first Disney Cruise and it’s hard to go back to other cruise lines now (though we still do) because the service is top notch. That being said, I want to be fair with my review, keep in mind, that we have a daughter who is kids club obsessed, loves the Princesses and is generally happy to be on a cruise ship no matter where we are going. 

Overall, we had a better experience on the Dream, but we appreciated the style of the Disney Wish as it’s more detailed and beautiful. 

The Dream is a well-designed ship and the locations of everything seemed to make sense. The Disney Wish only has two sets of elevators, but we didn’t feel like this was a big drawback, although we had more trouble remembering exactly where restaurants and lounges were when trying to get from A to B. 

We also loved the “District” area and the adults-only pool deck on the Dream in comparison to the bars and lounges being throughout the ship on the Wish and the adults only pool area being more spreadout and less focused on the pool. This may be a hot take, but we enjoyed the shows on the Dream more as well. 

Note- on the Disney Wish, you will notice that the elevators at the front of the ship have green carpet and the elevators in the back have blue carpet. This should help recall where on the ship you are.

No matter what, you can’t go wrong with a Disney Cruise and you will be sure to have a wonderful time. Whether it’s your first cruise or your 50th, you have young kids or it’s an adults only experience, I highly recommend sailing on either of the Disney Wish or Disney Dream. Especially if a stop at Castaway Cay (Disney’s Private island) is included!
