🎣 Things To Do In The Outer Banks
Beyond the beach, the Outer Banks is packed with family-friendly activities and memorable experiences. Depending on what your family is interested in, this list is broken down into sections based on activity. I’ve also included which area each activity is in if it’s specific to one location!
🌊 Outdoor Adventures & Beaches
- Visit Cape Hatteras National Seashore – Swim, sunbathe, or search for seashells along 70 miles of protected shoreline. This shore is managed by the National Park Service, so it’s well-maintained.
- Climb the dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park (Nags Head) – The tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast.
- Go wild horse spotting in Corolla – See the famous wild Spanish Mustangs roaming the dunes. While you can drive on the beach yourself, I recommend booking a tour for the family. It can get a bit nerve wracking being in your own vehicle, navigating other cars and the line to put air back in your tires is often very long.
- Take a surf lesson in Nags Head – OBX is a great beginner spot and you are sure to find great instructors if you need it!
- Go kayaking in the sound, or try another water sport – I especially appreciate the calm waters and beautiful sunsets. You can try everything from kayaking, to canoeing and paddle boarding. These are available in various areas of OBX, so even if there aren’t options directly in the area where you are staying, you will be sure to find a rental location within a quick drive.
- Book a dolphin-watching cruise – Popular in Roanoke Sound and around Hatteras. We love boat tours and try to book them anywhere we visit! It’s a great way to see an area from another vantage point, it’s a relaxing experience and you might catch some exciting wildlife!
- Try parasailing – For a thrilling day on the water. This is another experience I have done in a few places! It’s fun and thrilling for anyone brave enough to give it a try 🙂
- Rent a jet ski – This is a fun way to spend a few hours! You can hop around to a few places, depending on where you pick up your rental, and see lots of the waterfront!
- Rent a Pontoon Boat – If a more casual vibe is your speed, rent a pontoon boat for a few hours!
- Go fishing off Jennette’s Pier – Even if you don’t want to fish, we love visiting the pier to see the tanks inside and watch people catch fish (and sharks!) off of the pier!
- Book a deep-sea fishing charter – If you want to spend a few hours in the ocean, this is a great way to do it! I recommend booking a tour that will prepare your fresh catch for you to take home and enjoy!
- Visit Kitty Hawk Kites – You can look around the store, or even book a hang gliding lesson!
- Dowdy Park – A large and fun playground/park for the family. Located in Nags Head.
- Ferry to Ocracoke – This is a fun day trip! We have done this multiple times and love renting a golf cart once we make it to the island.
History & Culture
- Tour the Wright Brothers National Memorial – Site of the first powered flight. You can walk through the museum and tour the grounds.
- Explore Roanoke Island Festival Park – Step back into 16th-century life at this living history site.
- Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum – Learn about shipwrecks and OBX’s maritime history.
- Walk through the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station – A historic rescue station in Rodanthe.
- See the Lighthouses – There are multiple lighthouses to see within the Outer Banks beaches. You can visit iconic spots like Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse, or venture a bit further to see Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, or the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. We love visiting lighthouses on vacation, it’s great that there are multiple to choose from in OBX!
- Stop by the Whalehead Club in Corolla – Historic home with gorgeous architecture and water views.
Relax & Explore
- Stroll the Manteo Waterfront – Charming shops, restaurants, and boardwalk vibes. We love this quaint area!
- Take a sunset walk on Avalon Pier – OBX has several iconic piers, this one is great to walk and look at the view in the evening.
- Check out local art galleries – Especially in Manteo and Duck.
- Enjoy a soundside picnic in Duck Town Park – Peaceful and family-friendly. There are plenty of places to stop and grab your picnic foods!
- Sip wine at Sanctuary Vineyards – Tastings and relaxing views in Jarvisburg. This is a great option to do while you make the drive into OBX as it’s off the main island.
Food & Local Flavor
- Try Duck Donuts – A must-stop for fresh, customizable donuts. They have now expanded in many areas of the US, but this “Duck” is the original!
- Eat local seafood – Fresh catch with a coastal vibe. We love the coastal restaurants in OBX!
- Have an ice cream at Surfin’ Spoon – Frozen yogurt meets surfer charm.
Family-Friendly Fun
- Spend a day at H2OBX Waterpark – Water rides and lazy rivers for all ages. This is off of the island but worth a day trip if you are looking for something else to do!
- Hunt for ghost crabs at night – Bring a flashlight and search the beach after dark! This can be quite scary but it’s fun if you are interested!

🚗 Public Parking Areas & Access Points
Finding a spot to enjoy the Outer Banks North Carolina Beaches is easy thanks to well-marked public access points. Here are a few tips:
- Look for “Beach Access” signs – These typically include showers, restrooms, and boardwalks. You can also look on Google maps for the public beach accesses.
- In Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Kill Devil Hills, many public beaches offer free or paid parking.
- Bring a wagon or beach cart for easier transport from your car on the parking lot to the sand, especially at more remote beaches.
- Arrive early or late afternoon to have the best chance at finding parking.
🧳 Planning Tips for Visiting Outer Banks North Carolina Beaches
- When to Go: Late spring to early fall offers the best beach weather. Shoulder seasons (May and September) bring fewer crowds. BUT, it’s important to keep in mind, hurricane season. We have had a few vacations delayed due to storms, which isn’t fun for anyone! The summer months (starting with Memorial Day) are the most crowded, but if you aren’t worried about going to restaurants (long waits) and have booked a private house, you will be fine!
- Traveling with Kids: Pack beach toys, snacks, and shade. Many beaches have lifeguards during peak season. There are plenty of outdoor activities for families in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, from state parks to Lighthouses, cool wildlife around the Barrier Islands, and fun surf shops!
- Dining: Enjoy casual seafood spots, family-friendly diners, and beachfront picnic areas. Don’t miss Duck Donuts!
- Packing Essentials: Sunscreen, bug spray (yes, mosquitoes can be a thing), flip-flops, and reusable water bottles.
- Check the Local Water Notices: It’s very important to understand the tides, rip currents, etc. of the Atlantic Ocean. If you are visiting a beach without lifeguard stands, be sure to check the warnings for ocean and beach safety each morning.
