What To Wear In Europe For All Seasons – Packing List & Helpful Tips

It may be crazy, but packing for vacations is one of my favorite things to do. Not necessarily the actual packing portion, but definitely the planning for packing portion. I get super in-depth when planning our trips, which includes an in-depth view of what I’ll pack as well. After many trips to Europe, I think I have finally narrowed down what to wear in Europe and how to pack it to be as light as possible and fit the right vibe.

Hi there! Just a heads up- if you click on a link within this post I may receive a small commission from affiliate links. I appreciate your support of To Travel & Beyond and hope to bring you great recommendations for many years to come! See the full privacy policy here.

While I still go in-depth with my outfit planning, it’s simply because I enjoy it, but it’s even easier now that it’s more of a formula than a guessing game. If you are planning a trip to Europe, this post will have you covered with how to plan your outfits and pack for the trip.

Whether you’re exploring historic cities, lounging on Mediterranean beaches, or hiking in the Alps, packing the right essentials is key to a smooth and enjoyable trip. But it’s helpful to keep in mind that Europeโ€™s diverse climates and cultures require some careful planning.

Throughout this guide, I go into detail about what to pack for every season and region, because what to wear in Europe will change based on all of the above.

No matter where my travels are taking me, I have a few general conditions when it comes to packing. From a good packing edit to using the right luggage, it’s a good idea to start planning what to wear in advance of your trip. So, no matter if it’s one year before your vacation or 10 days before, this will help you think through the right strategy.

General Packing Essentials

Regardless of the season or your destination, having a few things on hand is essential. I go into detail about many of these below, but here is a quick list of must-have travel items for any trip to Europe:

  • Passport & Important Documentsย โ€“ Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Starting in 2025, you will need to have an Electronic Travel Authorization or an ETA. You can read more about theย UK ETAย here and theย EU ETIASย here.ย
  • Travel Insuranceย โ€“ A must-have for emergencies, medical issues, or lost luggage. I know this may seem like an additional expense that you don’t need to think about, but I HIGHLY recommendย travel insurance. It’s also helpful to look into what your credit card will cover as far as insurance, though I don’t suggest only relying on that insurance.ย
  • Credit Cards & Local Currencyย โ€“ Many places accept cards, but some smaller vendors may only take cash. We usually have at least 200 dollars worth of the location currency in cash. I usually keep my cards in aย small compact wallet, or in myย passport holderย if I need to keep it with me.
  • Universal Power Adapterย โ€“ European outlets vary, so bring an adapter compatible with different regions. We likeย this oneย if we are only traveling to the EU, and thisย universal travel adaptor.ย
  • Portable Chargerย โ€“ Great for long travel days when your phone battery is running low. An absolute must!ย
  • Reusable Water Bottleย โ€“ Many European cities have drinkable tap water all throughout. In their fountains, through the spickets, etc.ย
  • Lightweight Daypackย โ€“ Perfect for carrying daily essentials while sightseeing. I love having thisย foldable back packย on hand.ย
  • Comfortable Walking Shoesย โ€“ Streets in Europe, especially in historic cities, often have cobblestones. You need to have shoes you are comfortable wearing for miles on end, even in uneven streets. I’m partial to theseย white tennis shoes, plus a few additional styles to mix it up a bit.ย
  • Travel-Sized Toiletriesย โ€“ Many hotels and Airbnbs provide basic amenities, but it’s good to have your own.
  • Prescription Medications &ย First Aid Kitย โ€“ Include any prescription meds, pain relievers, and motion sickness pills if needed.

What To Wear In Europe

Accessories

Most people think about accessories last when it comes to packing, but I like to consider it as early as possible, especially when determining what to wear in Europe, because they really know how to accessorize. From hats to scarves, jewelry and belts, what do you have in your personal wardrobe that makes you feel good?

As far as having everyday bags, I generally stick with a smaller crossbody bag or a backpack. Both work well depending on the situation or experience for the day. Some people use money belts, but I haven’t found it necessary. You do want to be very cautious of pickpockets, though! I suggest looking up a few things on how to ensure you don’t look like an easy target, but also don’t go into your trip fearful!

I also LOVE this foldable backpack and tote bag. I have both and will bring at least one with me on every single trip I take. I love having these to throw things into while I am walking around.

Luggage

You could argue that this isn’t really something to “wear”, but I think it’s an essential piece of the overall look AND convenience of traveling, so it’s included in this section of the list. I can’t stress enough that having sturdy, good luggage should be high on the priority list. If you travel more than twice a year, invest in quality pieces of luggage. This includes everything from suitcases to having the right personal bag.

I have tried many carry-on bags, and this one is my favorite. It’s sturdy, manages to stroll over cobblestone streets and has held up over years and years of travel. I have also borrowed an Away carry on suitcase to try and while it’s wonderful, has great compression and looks sleek, the price is steep.

Clothing

Obviously what you decide to wear will have a big impact on your trip. I always recommend focusing on clothing you are comfortable in. It’s always fun to wear something new on a vacation, but I don’t recommend going too far outside of your typical comfort zone. For example, if you don’t like to wear low cut shirts in your day-to-day, you may not want to bring something low cut on your trip. Or if you prefer to wear dresses and don’t often find yourself in jeans, don’t plan to wear jeans everyday of the trip.

Stay true to what makes you feel good, from styles to categories to colors and cuts.

Tip:ย This dress styleย is hands down my favorite to wear in Europe and in everyday life! I have it in multiple colors and patterns and wear it all the time. I have multipleย patterns from Anthropologieย andย solid colors from Quince.ย

It’s also helpful to bring versatile options. I go into detail about what this means below, but think about how you can wear every clothing item more than once.

For example, if you are packing a dress, can you add a belt or a scarf to give it a new look, then maybe another day, wear a button-up shirt over it to give it more of a skirt look? I also love bringing a trench coat to change up the look a bit. It’s helpful to have more of a “capsule wardrobe” in mind when traveling.

No matter when you are traveling, layers will be your best bet. I usually focus on either a cute skirt with a tee shirt or a nice blouse with a pair of pants. I then pair it with a button up, blazer or jacket and add on as needed. Keep in mind the weather forecast and what you plan to do on your European adventure.

Pro Tip: Look into Nuuly before your trip. I always use Nuuly to rent several items to change up my travel wardrobe with high-quality and designer pieces that I wouldn’t typically buy for myself, but would love to wear on vacation. I have used this service for years and have even purchased a few things after renting at a major discount!

Shoes

This one is extremely important. You never want to travel with a brand new pair of shoes, even though you may be tempted! Find a pair of comfortable shoes and make sure they are good enough for a lot of walking. If you do plan to have newer shoes for the trip, ensure it’s not the first time, or even the fifth time you are wearing them once you get to your vacation. They should be well worn in to ensure you are comfortable and in good spirits.

Bring a few pairs of shoes. Just like you don’t want to have brand new shoes, it’s helpful to have multiple options to switch it up. I usually bring 1-2 pair of shoes that I know will be good for lots of walking, look good with dresses, pants or skirts, and a pair of shoes or sandals if appropriate for evening experiences. I recommend skipping the flip flops or very casual sandals like Tevas, unless you plan to visit a beach resort.

If you are traveling in the spring or fall, you may want to consider water resistant shoes in case it’s a bit rainy.

It’s helpful to think about where you will be walking as well. Much of Europe will have cobblestones and uneven ground, plus consider if you will be hiking and exploring. Ballet flats are always adorable, but only if you can wear them comfortably.

While white sneakers are my go-to, I also usually bring a pair with some color that will be versatile as well. I have wornย theseย all over Europe multiple times.ย

Airplane Outfit (or Travel Outfit)

Having a designated travel outfit for long days is a smart way to ensure comfort while traveling and maximize versatility throughout your trip. A long flight or training ride will require breathable, cozy clothing, but with the right choices, these pieces can also serve you well during your travels.

What to Wear on the Plane or Train:

  • Comfortable Pantsย orย Leggingsย โ€“ Opt forย joggers, stretchy jeans, orย breathable leggingsย that allow movement and work for sightseeing.
  • Layered Topsย โ€“ Aย basic T-shirtย orย tank topย with aย lightweight sweaterย orย cardiganย keeps you cozy while adjusting to changing temperatures.ย
  • Slip-on Shoes orย Sneakersย โ€“ Easy to remove for security checks and comfortable for walking upon arrival.
  • Scarfย or Wrapย โ€“ Can double as a blanket during the flight and be useful for visiting churches or colder evenings.
  • Compression Socksย โ€“ Help prevent swelling and discomfort during long flights. You may think regular socks work fine, but compression socks are worth the extra cost!ย

By choosing versatile, neutral-colored pieces, your airplane outfit can seamlessly blend into your daily wardrobe for the rest of your trip, reducing the need to pack extra items.

Personal Items To Pack For Europe

Water Bottle

I’m not sure if this really counts as a personal item, but it’s definitely a must for me! One of the most amazing things about some European countries is the accessibility to water fountains. With all of the walking and exploring you will be doing, you will want to have a water bottle on hand.

Medicine

The pharmacies in Europe are stocked with great medicine and personal items. I usually keep my list pretty short when it comes to traveling since I know I will be able to buy what I may need while we are exploring each city. I bring pain reliever, a few bandaids and Neosporin in a small first aid kit

However, you want to make sure your prescriptions are in your carry-on or personal item in the off chance that your checked luggage doesn’t make it at the same time as you do.

Toiletries

Everything from a razor to travel shampoo and conditioner, feminine products and lotion. I used to fully rely on what was available at the hotel, but as I travel more (and get older) I bring my own products now. I am more specific in what I want to use on my hair as well as on my face and body with lotion and serums.

I’ve used a Athena Club razor for a few years and really like it. I have one for traveling with a cover on it and another one at home.

Make-Up & Face Products

I bring travel sizes of all of my products, but I do loveย buyingย makeup and face products in Europe as well. The ingredients are usually better and the prices are cheaper in European Countries- maybe we will catch up at some point! As American Tourists, I usually stock up on what I can’t get for the same cost and ingredients.

Electronics To Pack For Europe

Converters!

This is a must-have when traveling in Europe if you aren’t from Europe. There are different electrical plugs in Europe and even within Europe. For example, the UK and Ireland use their own plug setup, while France and Italy use the same kind as the rest of Europe.

You will also want to leave your higher-volt electronics at home, as any device with a three-pronged plug won’t work with a converter. So most curling irons, straighteners, etc. won’t work. If you want to bring your own, I suggest this dual-voltage curling iron, I’ve used this multiple times and it works well.

We use a converter surge protector and single surge protectors as well.

Portable Charger

Speaking of charging devices, you won’t want to forget a portable charger. You will be on your phone taking photos, videos, navigating, etc. and having a portable to keep your phone charged in a must. I really love this larger charger and this more compact charger. We have used both for years and they work extremely well.

Other Electronics & Accessories

If you plan to bring a laptop or iPad, ensure you have the charger with it and that it will fit into your converter. I have experienced this before with my Macbook charger, so checking ahead of time is helpful.

tripod or gimbal for photos and videos. I love having a travel tripod to help us get family photos when we are traveling just the three of us, and I also bring a gimbal if I plan to shot a lot of video content. Granted, this may not be needed for everyone!

handheld fan, depending on the time of year you are traveling. If you are traveling in the summer, you will want to have a personal fan with you! We always use these in Disney but they are also a must in Europe. It can get quite hot, and many locations will not have air conditioning.

Travel umbrellas are helpful for the pop up drizzle as you hop between attractions and cafes.

Packing for Each Season

Spring (March-May)

Spring is a beautiful time to visit Europe, with mild temperatures and blooming flowers. However, weather can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly:

Summer (June-August)

Summers in Europe can be hot, especially in Southern regions like Spain, Italy, and Greece. However, if you are lucky enough to have a summer trip to Europe, you are in for the best of the best when it comes to days full of sunshine.

Keep in mind that your European hotel room may or may not have air conditioning. So you may want to be prepared for the hot weather even when in your room.

If traveling to coastal areas, pack for the beach:

  • Sandalsย or flip-flops you can wear to the beach
  • Swimwear
  • Cover up. I usually bring aย cover-upย that doubles as a dress so I can pop into a store or cafe before and afterย

Autumn (September-November)

Fall is a great time to explore Europe, with fewer crowds and mild temperatures. It’s one of my favorite times of year to be in Europe! Pack for layering:

Winter (December-February)

European winters can be quite cold, especially in Northern and Eastern Europe. I suggest sticking with darker colors and being able to mix and match outfits. Be prepared with:

I made an in-depth European seasonal packing list for the Winter with the various considerations for a cold-weather vacation. Especially to Christmas markets!

Regional Considerations

Temperatures and types of weather will vary greatly depending on which area of Europe you are visiting. The most important thing you should do is check the average weather for your exact destinations in advance and then continue to check them as your trip gets closer! We have experienced unseasonably cold springs and unseasonable warm falls, stay informed as your pack and prepare.

Stylish, put-together and refined outfits are a great way to think through how to wear your outfits.

  • Casual Wear:ย Well-fitted jeans or chinos with polo shirts or button-down shirts.
  • Formal Wear:ย A blazer and dress shoes for upscale restaurants or formal occasions.
  • Shoes:ย Comfortable sneakersย for walking and loafers or boots for a stylish touch.
  • Accessories:ย A lightweight scarf in spring and autumn, a beanie in winter.

Women

European women are so chic and stylish, I suggest bringing basics and layering on those to bring everything together.

  • Casual Wear:ย Dresses, skirts, or stylish jeans with blouses orย light sweaters.
  • Formal Wear:ย A dress or elegant top with slacks for evening outings.
  • Shoes:ย Comfortable flatsย or boots for sightseeing; heels for formal occasions.
  • Accessories:ย Aย scarfย to cover shoulders when entering churches,ย sunglassesย for summer, and gloves for winter.

Children

  • Casual Wear:ย Comfortable, breathable clothing like black leggings, shorts, and T-shirts.
  • Cold Weather Wear:ย Layers including a warm jacket, hat, and gloves.
  • Shoes:ย Sneakersย for walking and boots for colder weather.
  • Extras:ย A lightweight rain jacket and aย sunhatย for summer travel.

Fabric Recommendations & Advice

  • Summer:ย Cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool. Linen layers are ideal!ย
  • Spring & Autumn:ย Light wool, denim, and breathable synthetics. I usually layer t-shirts andย lightweight jackets, plus jeans, and sometimes with fleece-lined leggings underneath, depending on location and temperature.ย
  • Winter:ย Wool, fleece, and thermal layers for warmth. I wear a base layer daily during the winter in Europe. Most of the time I am out and about walking around the city instead of being indoors, so staying warm in a must.ย

Additional Points To Consider

  • In religious sites, like cathedrals and mosques, dress modestly. Women should carry aย scarfย to cover their shoulders if needed. You may also be required to cover your knees and midriffs as well.ย
  • Many Europeans dress stylishly, even for casual outings, so avoid overly athletic wear (leggings, athletic shorts, etc.) unless at the gym.
  • Stick with a color palette. A brighter color palette or shades of blue works well in the spring or summer. In the winter, dark, neutral colors help blend in and mix well for different outfits.ย

Tips for Packing Smart

  • Pack Light:ย Many European cities have lots of stairs, small hotel rooms, and cobblestone streetsโ€”lugging around a huge suitcase isnโ€™t ideal. Many accommodations will require use of the stairs because there isn’t an elevator, so keep that in mind!ย
  • Useย Packing Cubes:ย These help keep your luggage organized and maximize space. I am a big fan of packing cubes for myself and my daughter. I have used these compressionย packing cubesย for many years and will never go back! If you haven’t used a packing cube yet, now is the time to start!ย
  • Mix & Match Color Pallete:ย Stick to neutral colors and versatile clothing to create multiple outfits with fewer pieces. Being able to change up your outfits with the same main pieces will be ideal.ย
  • Check Airline Baggage Rules:ย Budget airlines often have strict carry-on limits, so weigh your bag before heading to the airport, and be sure to check the sizing as well.ย
  • Leave Room for Souvenirs:ย Youโ€™ll likely want to bring back some gifts or local specialties. I have definitely been known to buy an extra bag while traveling to bring home souvenirs; save yourself money by bringing aย travel duffel!
  • Dress Codes:ย There will be specific dress codes depending on where you are going and what you are doing. Try to check in advance to ensure you have the correct attire.ย
  • Understand Liquid Limits: Many European airports are very strict on the liquid limits when going through TSA. Be sure to keep yourย liquids togetherย and be prepared to get them out of your bag if needed. ย
  • Think Through Transportation: You may use various types of transportation on your trip, between trains and boats, planes and taxis, consider how much luggage can fit in each and how you will get around. Ask yourself, can I carry this while running through train stations? If yes, you are set!ย
  • Plan Your Outfits:ย This could be a bit much for some, but I plan out my daily outfits in Canva before packing to ensure I can mix and match and not over pack. I also tend to change mid-day, so it’s helpful to have a view of what I will be wearing.ย
  • Use A Packing List:ย I am a big believer in having a standard packing list for various types of vacations and using the Notes app to check things off as I go. This helps me stay on track and not forget anything.ย
  • Find A Washing Machine:ย If you want to pack extremely light, book accommodations with a washing machine or visit a laundry mat. This is the best way to pack as little as possible and still feel clean ๐Ÿ™‚ย

The final piece of advice to find your own version of the European Style while planning what to wear in Europe, is to wear layers, pair basics together, and accessorize as you see fit. The warmer months are going to be easier to play around with skirts, dresses, etc.; the colder months are going to be more focused on your outer layers. This guide is meant to be an example of a European packing list, but you will know what is best based on what you like to wear day-to-day.ย

Packing for Europe doesn’t have to be overwhelming, whether it’s your first trip or tenth trip. With this guide, youโ€™ll be well-prepared for any season, region, or adventure during your European travels.

Whether youโ€™re strolling through Paris in spring, lounging on an Italian beach in summer, or wandering the Christmas markets of Germany in winter, having the right essentials will make your trip stress-free and enjoyable.

Happy travels!
