Benefits of Staying at a Disney Resort | Perks & More

After staying in every Walt Disney World resort and many of the “off-site resorts”, I have a long list of resorts I love and a list of those I will never stay in again. The benefits of staying at a Disney resort are what keeps us coming back to the onsite resorts, and I’m excited to dive into why they may be the best option for you and your travel group as well!

Walt Disney World has over 20 on-property resorts. That’s a lot of resorts to choose from for your next Disney World trip! But how do you know which one is right for you? I have recommendations and a full guide to help you decide. But before you start thinking about which resort you want to stay in, it’s helpful to understand the benefits of staying at a Disney resort. 

What You Need To Know

Before giving you all the details about the onsite Disney resort perks, let’s explain the difference between the few types of vacation experiences you could have- onsite, offsite, vacation rental, etc.

When planning a trip to Walt Disney World, there are a variety of resort and accommodation options to fit every style, group size, and budget. Here’s a breakdown of the main categories:

1. Disney Resort Hotels (Onsite)

Staying at a Disney-owned resort includes benefits like early theme park entry, free transportation, immersive Disney theming, and proximity to the parks. We’ll go into these perks below! 

These resorts are grouped into:

• Value Resorts: Budget-friendly with over-the-top theming, basic amenities, and quick-service dining. Perfect for families and those who plan to spend most of their time in the parks.
  • Examples: Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Art of Animation, All-Star Movies, Music, and Sports.
• Moderate Resorts: A step up in comfort and amenities with more subtle theming, larger rooms, pools with slides, and both quick and table-service dining.
  • Examples: Caribbean Beach Resort, Port Orleans – French Quarter & Riverside, Coronado Springs Resort.
• Deluxe Resorts: The most luxurious Disney hotels, located closest to the parks with premium dining, spacious rooms, exceptional theming, and top-notch amenities.
  • Examples: Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Polynesian Village Resort, Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
• Deluxe Villas (Disney Vacation Club Resorts): Designed for extended stays or larger groups, these offer studio to 3-bedroom units with kitchenettes or full kitchens. Bookable by anyone (not just DVC members).
  • Examples: Bay Lake Tower, Riviera Resort, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West.

2. Disney Good Neighbor Hotels (Offsite but Affiliated)

These are non-Disney hotels that meet Disney’s quality standards. They are usually close to Walt Disney World and offer a mix of affordability and convenience. Some provide early park entry and scheduled shuttle service, though perks vary by hotel.

Examples: Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista, Holiday Inn Orlando – Disney Springs Area, Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando Disney Springs.

3. Offsite Hotels

Located throughout the greater Orlando area, offsite hotels offer a wide range of prices and styles – from budget motels to luxury resorts. These do not come with Disney benefits, and transportation to the parks may require a car or rideshare. They’re often more affordable and can offer amenities like free breakfast or large pools, but the perks of an onsite resort may outweigh the cost differences. 

Examples: Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek, JW Marriott Orlando, and other major hotel brands.

4. Vacation Rentals

The best option for larger families or longer stays, vacation homes, condos, and Airbnb-style rentals provide extra space, full kitchens, laundry, and privacy. These are especially popular for guests who want to cook, spread out, or stay in a more home-like environment. A car is typically needed for transportation to and from the parks.

Each type of accommodation offers a different experience – from complete Disney immersion to spacious, budget-friendly alternatives. Your choice will depend on your priorities: location, amenities, budget, and how much time you plan to spend in and out of the parks.

Benefits of Staying at a Disney Resort

These benefits are in no particular order because every travel group will prefer different things. For our family, our top benefits vary greatly based on the type of trip we are hoping to have. I have a list of the questions we ask ourselves at the bottom of this post. 

#1 Prime Location Near the Parks  

One of the top reasons to stay at a Walt Disney World Resort is the incredibly close proximity to the theme parks. Disney resorts are strategically located, so you can spend less time traveling and more time enjoying the magic. 

Whether you’re staying at one of the original hotels or a value resort, you’re often just minutes away from the wonder, which makes afternoon breaks or last-minute park visits effortless. Plus, being nearby means you’re closer to all the park-specific entertainment and dining experiences you won’t want to miss. 

This convenience enhances your vacation pace and helps avoid the hassle many offsite hotel guests deal with daily.  

• Walking Distance and Disney Transportation Access: Many resorts offer either easy walking access, or frequent transportation options to multiple parks; this cuts down waiting times and hassle. You can take a quick stroll to Magic Kingdom or catch a bus to EPCOT from your hotel doorstep without needing a car. This flexibility means you can return for a midday hotel nap or swim and then head back refreshed.  
• Proximity to Park Entrances: Being close means quicker park entry and exit, letting you beat crowds or catch nighttime spectaculars. Instead of long rides or delayed rideshare pickups, you enjoy that stress-free transition from resort to park.  
• Time-Saving Convenience: Shorter transit times translate into more time for rides, shows, and dining reservations. You don’t have to plan your whole day around transportation schedules or unexpected delays.  
• Enhanced Spontaneity: The ease of access means you can make last-minute decisions to visit parks or just soak in the atmosphere without worrying about travel logistics.  
• Stress Reduction: Avoiding traffic on I-4 and large parking lots means your vacation stays joyful. 

Cutting commute times in favor of extra magical moments with family or friends is a huge bonus. Staying on Disney property keeps the magic flowing smoothly, allowing you to focus on fun instead of logistics.  

Example of the Benefits of Prime Location  

Imagine waking up at your Disney Resort hotel and deciding to enjoy an early breakfast before casually strolling (or boating) into Magic Kingdom just as the gates open. You miss the outside crowds piling into parking lots because you’re already inside the park, steps from your room. This seamless transition allows you to savor rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train during less crowded morning hours before heading back to the resort mid-day for a refreshing swim or nap. Later, you return to the park without the worry of driving or long waits for transportation, fully immersed in a stress-free magical day.

#2 Complimentary Transportation Options

One of the often underappreciated perks of staying on Disney property is the wide variety of no-cost transportation. Disney offers buses, monorails, boats, and the Skyliner gondolas, reducing the need for rental cars or rideshares. This convenience is particularly helpful if you want to avoid the hassle of parking lots. Plus, it’s also so much fun to travel in these unique ways, adding to the overall Disney experience.

• Disney Buses: These reliable buses run frequently and connect all resorts with all of the Walt Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs. They allow easy park hopping and late-night returns without needing a vehicle.  
• Monorail System: Guests staying at select resorts like the Contemporary or Polynesian enjoy elevated monorail rides to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, adding a retro-futuristic touch to getting to the parks. 
• Boating Options: For some resorts like Fort Wilderness, Boardwalk or the Grand Floridian, you can glide across lakes on charming ferry boats to reach parks, creating a serene, scenic entry.  
• Disney Skyliner: This recent addition offers thrilling aerial views as guests ride gondolas between resorts and EPCOT/Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s fast and a great way to avoid crowds and traffic.  
• Accessible Transportation: All Disney transportation is designed for guests of every ability, ensuring everyone can travel comfortably and safely.

This range of options not only saves money but adds an element of ease and excitement to your entire visit. You can relax knowing you’ll rarely need to worry about navigation or parking.  

#3 Early Theme Park Entry   

A wonderful perk for Disney Resort guests is Early Theme Park Entry, allowing them to enter the parks 30 minutes before the general public each day. This early access helps secure prime rides and shows before the crowds gather. It’s a golden opportunity, especially if you want to accomplish big-ticket experiences with less waiting. Early Theme Park Entry creates a relaxed and rewarding start to your Disney adventure.  

Pro-Tip: The time a park opens is called “Rope-Drop”. If you want to be one of the first in-line for rope-drop, I highly recommend arriving to the park 45-60 minutes before the posted early entry time. In most cases, you will be welcomed into the park 30 minutes prior to opening. 

• Access to All Four Parks: Guests can use the early entry benefit at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, rotating your advantage each day.  
• Popular Ride Priority: Early hours mean shorter lines for hot attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, or Avatar Flight of Passage.  
• Ideal Photo Opportunities: A quieter park means better backdrops for those unforgettable vacation photos with fewer people in the background. Those early morning castle pics in Magic Kingdom are amazing!  
• Easier Park Introduction: Early entry eases guests into the busy day with calmer crowds and more breathing room.  
• Flexibility to Plan: Starting earlier gives options to fit in more experiences or take leisurely breaks with ease.

Disney resorts are designed to transport guests to different worlds without ever leaving their rooms and resort. From tropical escapes to futuristic resorts, each hotel offers its own unique flair and ambiance that complements the parks’ magic. This immersion keeps the Disney vibe alive throughout your stay, turning your hotel into an extension of the theme park experience.  

Every resort has it’s own “theme”, some are more in your face than others. 

• Distinctive Resort Themes: Whether it’s the African savanna feel of Animal Kingdom Lodge or the real-life Pixar vibes of Art of Animation, the themes are crafted to enchant.  
• Themed Room Decor: Rooms and suites often reflect the resort’s story, offering themed furniture, artwork, and color schemes to delight fans of all ages.  
• Themed Pools and Recreation: Pools and play areas follow the resort’s overall concept, like The Little Mermaid at Disney’s Caribbean Beach resort or the dinosaur sculptures at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

#5 Exclusive Resort Guest Activities  

Disney Resort guests can enjoy special activities and offerings not available to offsite visitors. These experiences enhance your stay by adding unique entertainment, personal interactions, and extra fun. Resort guests are treated a bit like VIPs, with chances to connect to the Disney magic beyond the parks.  

• Campfire and Movie Nights: Many resorts offer nightly campfires and outdoor movie screenings, creating family-friendly bonding moments under the stars.  
• Resort-Exclusive Fishing Experiences: Some locations, like Fort Wilderness, provide fishing excursions that are peaceful, scenic, and memorable. 
• Character Meet-and-Greets at Resorts: Select resorts feature character appearances for spontaneous magical moments without park admission.  
• Fitness and Yoga Classes: Health-conscious guests can join guided yoga sessions or fitness classes designed to blend wellness with the overall Disney experience.

To be completely transparent, while these activities are designed to be for resort guests only, many of them take place outside of the restricted guest areas. So it isn’t completely blocked off to only guests, though it makes me much easier to experience many of these activities when you are steps away from your room. 

#6 Priority Dining Reservations  

Being a Disney Resort guest gives you an advantage with earlier access to dining reservations at popular restaurants. Since dining fills up quickly, this head start can make the difference between snagging a coveted table and missing out. It’s especially beneficial for signature locations that often sell out months in advance.  

• 60-Day Booking Window: Resort guests can book dining reservations 60 days ahead, versus 30 days for others, giving a big leg up for sought-after spots. Resort guests also get access for their entire vacation, rather than day by day of non-resort guests. 
• Advanced Access to Special Events: Many themed or seasonal dining events prioritize Disney guests for reservations. These events are Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party, The Very Merry Christmas Party, and other events that pop up throughout the year.   
• Expert Disney Dining Concierge: Some resorts offer personalized help booking dining, ensuring you make the best choices for your group.

Pro-Tip: Use a travel agent! They are free to use and will secure your reservations for you, so you can avoid the 6am wakeup call! 

This early access lets you plan your meals to fit perfectly with your park schedule and your family’s favorite tastes.  

#7 Extra Hours with Extended Evening Hours Access  

Certain Disney resorts offer Extended Evening Access or “Extra Magic Hours” at select parks where guests enjoy additional time in the parks after regular closing hours. These quieter evenings are perfect for winding down while still soaking in the atmosphere.  

• Access to Select Attractions: Even after day guests leave, key rides and shows remain open exclusively for resort guests.  
• Lower Crowd Levels: This less crowded environment offers a different feel, often making popular rides more approachable.  
• Relaxed Strolling: Guests can enjoy the main street ambiance, shop windows, and night-time entertainment with calm surroundings.  
• Exclusive Viewing Opportunities: Sometimes, special fireworks or parades are available to resort guests in prime locations.  
• Time Management Ease: You can enjoy a full park day and still squeeze in extra memorable nighttime fun without fatigue.

#8 Magical Disney Customer Service  

Disney cast members are trained to deliver exceptional customer service, and guests staying on property benefit from the full magic of this dedication throughout their vacation. Their friendly attentiveness can transform everyday moments into personal highlights.  

• Helpful Resort Staff: Whether at the front desk, dining, or concierge, the staff offers warm welcomes and expert help.  
• Prompt Issue Resolution: If you encounter problems, cast members go the extra mile to find solutions quickly. Having access to the front desk staff and the concierge desk is really helpful.   
• Language and Accessibility Support: Disney accommodates diverse guests through multilingual cast members and accessibility services.  
• Attention to Detail: From curbside assistance to custom celebrations, the service enhances every aspect of your stay.

Feeling genuinely cared for as a guest boosts your enjoyment and eases any worries that might arise.  

#9 Unique Resort Dining Experiences  

Disney resorts feature exclusive dining venues with menus and atmospheres you won’t find elsewhere. These spots offer wonderful dining experiences that complement your stay and add layers to your trip.  

While these dining experiences are not limited to onsite-resort guests, it’s so nice to have the option to stay onsite and be steps away from your room before and after. 

• Signature Restaurants: Options like California Grill or Victoria & Albert’s provide gourmet, award-winning food in elegant settings.  
• Casual Themed Eateries: From ‘Ohana’s island flavors to the Spanish style offerings at Toledo, each offers a unique story and tasty dishes.  
• Poolside Snacks and Bars: Resorts feature convenient and creative refreshment points for light bites and tropical drinks.  
• Character Dining: Certain resorts host character breakfasts or dinners, combining food and entertainment for unforgettable moments.  
• Seasonal and Special Event Menus: Dining options evolve with holidays or special celebrations, offering one-of-a-kind treats.

These dining experiences extend your adventure beyond the parks and into your resort retreat. Don’t forget the Mickey waffles!

#10 Recreation and Amenities  

Each Disney resort offers a variety of recreational activities and amenities designed to suit different tastes and age groups. Whether you want relaxation or adventure, the options add value to your overall stay. You may find some of these at other resorts off Disney-property as well, but it’s nice to know you will always experience great amenities when you are at a Disney resort. 

• Pools with Slides: Family-friendly pools with exciting additions like slides at Moderate resorts and above.  
• Fitness Centers: Stay on track with exercise options, including gym equipment, classes, and jogging trails. Some of my favorite resort gyms are at the Polyneisian Tower and Beach.Yacht club. There are also jogging tracks at every resort as well!  
• Spa Services: Pamper yourself with massages, facials, and wellness treatments that recharge your energy. Not every Disney resort has a spa, but it’s nice to stay at one that does!   
• Children’s Activity Centers: Supervised play areas and kids’ clubs offer engaging activities and imaginative fun. We love and truly value this option! Look for a community hall at your Walt Disney World Resort hotel.   
• Sports and Games: Some resorts feature basketball courts, volleyball, bike rentals, and fishing excursions to keep everyone entertained.

Adding recreational variety helps families and individuals balance excitement with rest and rejuvenation.  

#11 Flexible Booking and Payment Plans  

Disney Resort guests benefit from flexible booking options and payment plans that make vacation planning easier and less stressful. This financial convenience encourages more relaxed preparation for your getaway.  

• Package Payment Plans: Guests can put down a $200 deposit and pay the remainder in installments before arrival.  
• Cancellation Flexibility: Many bookings allow free cancellation or changes within a specific timeframe, providing peace of mind.  
• Vacation Planning Tools: Disney’s online tools and Cast Member assistance help tailor packages according to budgets and preferences.  
• Room-Only or Package Deals: You can book just the room or bundle ticket and dining options for custom holiday planning.  
• Special Offers Notifications: Resort guests often hear about flash sales and incentives earlier. This can include everything from Disney dining plan discounts, 40% discounted stays, free tickets for kids and more. 

These options keep budgets manageable and reduce upfront costs, letting you focus on the fun ahead.  

#12 Complimentary Magical Extras

An exciting additional for Disney resort hotel guests are the magical extras and free benefits that come along with our resort stay. 

• Luggage Tags: Disney characters on luggage tags are something we have collected since I started traveling to Disney as a kid! I love having these as free souvenirs. 
• Mini Golf: There are a few options when it comes to a free game of Mini Golf on Disney property. Look into your magical extras to see which one is closest to your resort! 
• Free Disney Water Parks Admission: Depending on your dates of stay, especially if it’s in the summer, you can get free access to one of the Walt Disney World water parks on your arrival day. Start your vacation right by taking laps in the wave pools! 

#13 Start Your Vacation Early

As mentioned above, it’s important to Disney that you start your vacation as soon as possible. So when you have a stay booked at one of the Walt Disney World hotels, your vacation starts at midnight on the check-in day and doesn’t end until 11:59 on the night of your check out. Which means, you get the full benefits of the resort for your entire stay in the magic. 

#14 Save Money on Parking

While you don’t need to drive to the parks, you do have the option, and you will receive free parking at all Disney parks! You also will have free parking at your resort as well! 

#15 Priority Experience Reservations  

As a Disney resort guest, you are able to book select experiences up to in advance alongside your dining reservations. While offsite guests will not gain access until closer to their park visit. 

• 60-Day Booking Window: Guests of the Disney hotels are able to book experiences like Bippity Boppity Boutique or a Dessert party, 60 days prior to their travel day. As is with the dining reservations, access is provided for guests for the entire length of their stay. 
• Advanced Access to Lightning Lanes: Guests are able to book their Lightning Lanes 7-days in advance, while off-site guests only gain access 3-days prior. Lightning Lanes are extremely helpful if the most popular rides are on your must ride list. Keep in mind, Lightning Lanes are an additional cost.

Pro-Tip: Look into resorts like the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin, even though they are an off-site resort, they actually get the benefits of a deluxe resort! 

Questions We Ask Ourselves Before Each Trip

1. Are we planning to visit multiple parks? This helps us decide if a specific resort is worth the cost and if we should plan our transportation accordingly. If we want to start our day at one park and end it at another, or squeeze in multiple favorites like EPCOT and Magic Kingdom in one day, having a Park Hopper ticket and being at a Epcot or Magic Kingdom resort, gives us that flexibility. It also influences how we pace ourselves, where we make dining reservations, and how we prioritize Lightning Lane selections.

2. Which parks will we be starting the day? Knowing our “first park” helps us build our itinerary around early entry benefits, rope drop strategies, and ride priorities. For example, if we’re starting at Hollywood Studios, we might focus on getting in line early for Rise of the Resistance. If it’s Magic Kingdom, we may head straight to Fantasyland for Peter Pan’s Flight or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. It also helps us make smart choices about which resort could get us where we want to be, as long as with Lightning Lane reservations and mobile orders.

3. Will we spend a lot of time at the resort pool? If yes, we’ll want to build in mid-day breaks or even dedicate a full afternoon to downtime. This affects which resort we book (some have much better pool areas for families or themed experiences), how we pack (extra swimsuits, pool shoes, etc.), and how we pace the trip. Prioritizing pool time can also mean fewer park days or choosing a Deluxe Resort to take full advantage of amenities.

While we are fully team on-site hotels when it comes to our Disney vacations, it all depends on determining if you want to stay in the Disney bubble and if these exclusive perks will benefit you. So when it comes to planning your Walt Disney World vacation, I hope this information was helpful!
