Choosing the perfect cruise for your family’s first voyage, or your next one, is a big decision. It can feel overwhelming trying to compare and decide on Disney Cruise Line vs Royal Caribbean sailings, and while we love both cruise lines, they offer very different vacation experiences for families.

Below, I’ll walk through the key differences (and similarities) in a way that helps you decide which cruise line is right for your family’s style, interests, and budget.

Having sailed on multiple Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise’s, I have to admit, I didn’t want to love Royal Caribbean as much as I did. We love sailing with Disney, it’s an extension of the Disney parks (which we also love) and feels like such a magical experience.

But, I am now happy to admit, we also love Royal Caribbean and have definitely added them to our list of considerations for our vacations. 

Before diving into the different experiences between the two cruise lines, I want to mention that we have only sailed Disney and Royal Caribbean from Florida.

We have sailed with other cruise lines from Florida, but as of now, they don’t make it to the top of our list when planning vacations from the East Coast. We have sailed other cruise lines in Europe, but for the point of this post, I am specifically including details we noticed for cruises from the US. 

Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean: What Makes Each Special

If I had to summarize both cruise lines in a few words, this is my elevator pitch: 

Disney Cruise Line brings that magical, storytelling-centered experience that families know and love, while Royal Caribbean leans into larger-than-life adventure and high-energy fun for all ages. Fleet Size & Ship Variety

Royal Caribbean has a much larger fleet with ships of all shapes and sizes- from the more classic radiance-class ships to the towering Oasis class with multi-neighborhood experiences at sea. With 29 total ships, 7 total ship classes (Icon, Oasis, Quantum, Freedom, Voyager, Radiance, and Vision), and more than 18 ships with a capacity of 5,000 passengers.

Disney Cruise Line’s fleet is smaller, with only 7 ships, but plans to have up to 13 in the coming years, all with under 6,000 passenger capacity, the majority have only a 3,000-4,000 capacity. The ships are designed specifically around family storytelling and Disney charm. While you’ll see fewer ships and itineraries, each one is refined to deliver the signature Disney vacation feel.

Dining & Beverage Experiences

Disney Cruise is all about immersive dining. From rotational dining (where your servers follow you to different themed restaurants) to character dining experiences, meals are an extension of the cruise’s story. Kids meals and allergy-friendly options are excellent, and adult-exclusive dining (like Palo and Enchanté) brings a touch of upscale flair.

A great option on Disney ships is the free room service nearly 24/7. Including free Mickey ice cream bars! Soft drinks are also free for everyone. 

Royal Caribbean also offers a great variety of dining options, with more choices overall thanks to larger ships. You’ll find classic cruise favorites like a main dining room and buffets, plus specialty restaurants from Italian to Izumi sushi & hibachi. 

For quick service meals and buffets, both cruise lines have great options, but one big difference is the availability of the Windjammer buffet for dinner on a Royal Caribbean ship. If you are a family who likes variety and doesn’t want to sit for a 1-1.5 hour meal in the evening (even when they are impeccably themed), Royal may win for this one. 

When it comes to beverage packages, you won’t find any on a Disney cruise ship. Royal Caribbean has multiple options, depending on what you are interested in. From the soda package & coffee options, to full availability with nearly all alcoholic drinks, protein shakes, speciality coffees, and more. 

Pro-tip for booking a beverage package with Royal Caribbean: book your package before you go, and keep an eye on the cost before you sail. The discounts range from 20%-55%, and you can get a refund from your initial package and book it cheaper if the cost goes down while you are planning.

Stateroom Things To Know

In terms of accommodations, Disney Cruise Line focuses on well-designed, family-friendly layouts. Expect thoughtful spaces with ample storage and entertainment, plus some exclusive themes like pirate rooms with real portholes shaped like Mickey. They also add hidden beds wherever possible to fit as many kids as they can. 

One thing we love about the staterooms on Disney cruise line ships is the split bathroom. The toilet room and the shower are in two separate spaces, which makes getting ready as a family much easier! 

Royal Caribbean offers broader range of staterooms – from interior pods to sprawling multi-room family suites (especially on Oasis-class ships). If having multiple connected rooms or elevated suite options matters, Royal Caribbean typically has more flexibility.

The rooms on Royal Caribbean are generally larger on the big ships, but Disney’s efficient layouts and magical touches create a cozy, functional space perfect for families.

Entertainment & Shows

If Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean entertainment were a competition, Disney wins for pure nostalgia and story-driven theatrics. Broadway-style shows featuring Disney characters, themed deck parties, and character meet-and-greets create experiences kids remember for years.

But that’s not to say that Royal Caribbean is lacking in entertainment, because they absolutely are not. They deliver big-scale entertainment with high-production shows, Broadway-style musicals, and incredibly unique features like ice skating spectaculars and aerial acrobatics on certain ships. It truly feels like “Vegas at sea,” with appeal for older kids and teens just as much as little ones.

To be honest, the Aqua shows, like Aqua80 on Royal Caribbean are some of the best shows I have ever seen. They are absolutely incredible and completely jaw-dropping. The diving, the high dives, the choreography, the technology, it’s all next level. 

However, watching a Disney Broadway-style show while sailing on a Disney ship just hits different for Disney fans. There’s something emotional and nostalgic about hearing those songs at sea.

Beyond the main stage productions, both cruise lines fill their schedules with games and interactive activities throughout the day.

On Disney Cruise Line, you’ll find family trivia (often Disney-themed), animation classes where you learn to draw Disney characters, karaoke nights, deck parties like Pirate Night with fireworks off the ship, immersive places like the Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge on the Disney Wish, and interactive game shows hosted by the cruise staff.

There are also movie screenings featuring first-run Disney films in the onboard movie theaters, character dance parties, and family-friendly competitions that bring everyone together. 

Even the smallest moments, like surprise character sightings in the atrium, add to the entertainment value.

On Royal Caribbean, the variety is massive, especially on the larger ships. Expect game shows, scavenger hunts, live music throughout the ship, trivia covering every topic imaginable, sports tournaments, cooking demonstrations, and dance classes.

Some ships even have escape rooms, laser tag, bumper cars, and full-scale sports courts. The activity level feels high-energy and fast-paced, giving families plenty of options from morning to night.

When comparing Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean entertainment overall, it really comes down to style. Disney focuses on immersive storytelling and shared family magic. Royal Caribbean leans into spectacle, innovation, and variety. Both are fantastic, but the vibe is very different.

Kids’ Areas & Family Spaces

Both cruise lines excel at keeping kids engaged, but in very different ways. Honestly, I was a bit nervous about how my daughter would react going from the incredible Disney Oceaneer Club to the Royal Caribbean Adventure Ocean. Disney just does such an amazing job- but I am happy to share that my daughter really does love both of them! 

• Disney Cruise Line: Dedicated spaces for every age group (including the famous Oceaneer Club and Lab), character interactions, story time, and experiences that make Disney ideal for younger kids and those who adore Disney worlds. The over-the-top “Disney” feel from the parks, but in a kids club where they can feel independent, meet some of their favorite characters, and have an immersive experience. We LOVE that the kids club can contact us at anytime in the app. If our daughter wanted a break, needed a snack, etc. the cast members could send us a message directly. 
• Royal Caribbean: Dedicated spaces for a few age groups, more of a school activity vibe but still lots of fun. They play tons of games, have crafting areas, and ensure there are plenty of options for interactive activities. We have had great experiences with the Royal kids club, but we do wish they had proactive communication onboard through their app. 

Another thing to consider is the overall vibe for kids and families onboard. Some kids may not want to hang out in the kids’ club, and some parents may want their kids to stay with them throughout the vacation, so what options are availible for everyone to enjoy? Both cruise lines have plenty of options for the whole family! 

Disney Cruise Line is great about filling the itinerary with games, trivia, and other family experiences- like the Incredi-course on the Wish class ships and putt-putt on the sports deck. You will also notice open houses for all of the kids and teen clubs during different times of day. 

I will admit, Royal Caribbean may win on this one though, they have much larger ships compared to the smaller ships with Disney, so they are able to pack in more. From ice skating on board (seriously!) to laser tag, rock climbing walls, a zip line across the decks, FlowRiders®, bumper cars, and interactive tech play spaces. Teens and tweens especially love the freedom and variety here. 

For families trying to decide Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean based on kids’ activities, ask yourself: do you want immersive themed play (Disney) or high-octane variety with thrilling activities (Royal Caribbean)?

Entertainment & Activities for Adults

Parents don’t get vacation FOMO on either line, but the vibe differs between the two cruise lines, as well as depending on which ship you are sailing. 

On Disney Cruises, adult-exclusive areas like lounges, nightclubs, and restaurants offer tranquil or romantic escapes, perfect for date nights while the kids are in youth clubs. I have my preferences depending on which ship we are sailing. Wish class ships have an adults-only area in the back of the ship, with a cafe, full bar, hot tubs, and a pool, while the Dream class ships like the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have an adults-only area mid-ship with a lounge, full bar in the pool but not a swim-up), and seating off to the sides. 

Royal Caribbean delivers a vibrant nightlife, bars, comedy clubs, and dance venues that skew slightly older in energy. The adults-only Solarium on most ships is a serene hideaway if you just want quiet time, but like on the Disney ships, it varies depending on which ship you are on. My favorite so far has been the Solarium on Utopia of the Seas. I also love that Royal Caribbean has a adults-only buffet available for some meals in the Solarium. 

While we really loved the adult pool areas on some cruise ships more than others, it’s not exactly Disney vs an RC ship, but more about the specific ship on either line. 

Pools, Water Experiences & Outdoor Fun

Pools, outdoor experiences, and the vibe on the deck are highlights on both lines, though they’re very different. Disney’s pool decks are bright, playful, and designed with families in mind (plus the iconic water coaster on some of the Disney cruise ships).

Royal Caribbean raises the bar for thrill seekers- whether it’s multiple water slides, sports courts, surf simulators, or sprawling outdoor spaces on the giant Oasis-class and Icon-class ships.

Both lines serve up great splash zones and family pool areas, but Royal Caribbean definitely pushes the envelope for active outdoor adventure.

Private Islands & Destinations

It’s hard to talk Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean without talking about private islands and port experiences. 

• Disney’s Castaway Cay is a standout favorite for families: crystal-clear beaches, kid zones, complimentary food, watersports, and adult-only retreats all in one beautiful Bahamian location. Plus- the cast members from the ship meet you on the island and run the kids club! So you have the option to spend some of the day on the adults-only section while the kids have a blast in the kids zone, while trusting the safety and security of their experience. 
• Disney’s Lookout Cay is a newer addition and is a private Disney port, also in the Bahamas. This experience is similar to Castaway Cay but brings a bit more of a Bahamian vibe to the island. 
• Royal Caribbean’s private destinations, ike Perfect Day at CocoCay, also deliver epic beach days with thrilling attractions like the tallest waterslide in North America and floating cabanas for rent. 
• Royal also has other destinations like Royal Beach Club in Nassau, a ticketed private experience for Royal Caribbean cruisers only (we did this in early 2026 and had a great experience), as well as Labadee in Haiti. 

Both cruise lines offer unforgettable days ashore, but Disney’s tends to feel more family-centered and relaxed, while Royal Caribbean leans into adventure and amenities for all ages.

Cost Comparison

Cruising with either line involves a range of prices, depending on ship, season, stateroom, and itinerary. 

If cost is the only factor, Royal Caribbean can be more budget-friendly, especially if you book early, choose interior cabins, or sail on older but well-loved ships.

While, Disney Cruise Line tends to be pricier due to included entertainment, character experiences, and overall brand positioning.

However, comparing Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean purely on cost doesn’t tell the whole story – think about what kind of memories you want, and how much value you place on on-board experience, food quality, and entertainment. 

Disney Cruise vs Royal Caribbean: Which Should You Choose?

Here’s the honest takeaway: we love both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, and neither choice is wrong. Yet the vacation your family will experience can look very different depending on which one you choose.

If your family lives for Disney magic, character time, and storytelling that carries from breakfast to bedtime, Disney Cruise Line will feel like a dream from bow to stern. It’s especially magical for younger kids. 

If your crew loves big thrills, variety of activities, water parks, and adventure-packed days, Royal Caribbean delivers an incredible blend of excitement and choice.

I would also recommend considering the itinerary. Sailing with Disney is less about the ports for us because we want to experience everything on the ship, while with Royal Caribbean, the port options are important to us.
