With a variety of accommodation options available, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. However, this guide will help you narrow down the best Walt Disney World resorts for families with kids of all ages. Spoiler alert, staying at a Disney World-owned hotel offers numerous benefits that cater to families with kids, but I will discuss a few off-property options as well.

It doesn’t matter if this is your first time, a once in-a-lifetime vacation, or a quick stay because you are a local, this guide will give you everything you need to know about staying onsite at a Disney resort. I will discuss the benefits of onsite, the various hotel categories, the transportation and perks available and the budget for each resort. 

After staying at every Walt Disney World resort property, I feel like we have a handle on which resorts are best for families and which are the top Disney resorts overall. While we have our opinions, I hope you take the time to consider what will work best for you based on each resort’s offering. 

In Disney World, you have options for accommodations. You could stay on-site at one of the Walt Disney World Resort Hotels, you could book hotel rooms at a Good Neighbor Hotel (more on this further in the post), stay at a non-affiliated hotel, or book a vacation rental. I’m here to tell you about the Disney world hotels, though I will provide a bit of information about the other options as well. 

Speaking of property, Walt Disney World is massive, spanning over 25,000 acres. With four theme parks, two water parks, a shopping and entertainment district, and numerous hotels, it’s essential to consider the size and layout of the property when choosing a resort. Opting for a hotel located close to the parks can save time and energy, especially when traveling with young children.

Benefits of Staying on Property in Walt Disney World

First and foremost, choosing a Disney-owned hotel ensures that you are immersed in the magic from the moment you arrive. Value Resorts

These resorts are the most affordable option for staying on Disney property. They are designed with whimsical and colorful themes and often feature large, immersive pool areas, though you will not find slides or hot tubs. The value resorts have a food court style, quick-service dining, and some with a poolside bar. While the rooms are more basic compared to the moderate and deluxe resorts, they still provide a comfortable and convenient place to stay during a Disney vacation.

Moderate Resorts

The moderate resorts offer a great balance between cost and amenities. Deluxe Resorts

Additionally, deluxe resorts often offer convenient access to the parks and other recreational activities. Deluxe guests receive extended evening hours 2x per week at various parks. 

Deluxe Villa Resorts & Options 

Villas are spacious, condo-style accommodations that provide more space and amenities than standard hotel rooms. They are well-suited for larger families or groups that require extra space and added privacy. 

Villas typically include separate living and dining areas, multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen, and in-unit laundry facilities. This setup can be particularly advantageous for guests who prefer to prepare their own meals or have longer stays at the resort.

It’s important to note that Villa availability may vary based on the specific resort and time of year, so it’s recommended to book well in advance to secure the desired accommodations. All-Star Music Resort is inspired by music and features larger-than-life musical instruments and musical notes throughout the property. The resort is designed to celebrate various music genres, including jazz, calypso, rock, country, and Broadway show tunes, creating a vibrant and fun atmosphere for guests.

Accommodation Type:

• The resort offers affordable accommodations in themed buildings with standard rooms and family suites.
• Standard rooms can accommodate up to 4 guests, while family suites can accommodate up to 6 guests and feature a kitchenette and additional living space.

Amenities:

• All-Star Music Resort features two themed pools, including the guitar-shaped Calypso Pool and the grand piano-shaped Piano Pool.
• The resort also has a game arcade, playground, and jogging trail for recreation.

Food Options: Intermission Food Court offers a wide selection of food and beverage options, including classic American fare, international cuisine, and kid-friendly meals.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is an iconic modern-themed hotel offering a unique combination of luxury and convenience. Situated on the monorail loop, the resort’s architecture and interior design reflect a sleek, contemporary style with monorails traveling right through the main building. The resort also provides stunning views of the Magic Kingdom and Seven Seas Lagoon, enhancing the overall guest experience with its proximity to the theme park.

The highlight of this resort is the short walk to Magic Kingdom, with your own private security line! In 5 minutes you can be at the Magic Kingdom gates. If you are going to Disney with a plan to spend most of your time in Magic Kingdom (which is great for young kids!) the prime location of the Contemporary could be very helpful.

It’s a lakefront resort with easy transportation to Fort Wilderness, the Contemporary and Magic Kingdom. You will love to see the details at this resort! 

Copper Creek vs. Boulder Ridge:

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins offer a more modern and luxurious feel, with some accommodations overlooking Bay Lake. Boulder Ridge Villas, on the other hand, have a more rustic and cozy ambiance, inspired by the railroad hotels of the American West. Both provide unique experiences, so the choice between the two depends on individual preferences. You will be close to the bus stop, a pool and dining in either building.

• Cabins are in incredible option for a family looking for a unique accommodation experience! They include 2 full bathrooms, a full kitchen, living and dining areas, a washer and dryer, and a private porch with a hot tub. They all have a beautiful Waterview!

Fort Wilderness 

Fort Wilderness Campground is the only place where you can camp at Walt Disney World. This expansive campground offers a unique outdoor experience within the Walt Disney World Resort. Nestled in a serene forest setting, Fort Wilderness provides a rustic retreat while still being conveniently close to the theme parks and attractions.

Camping at Fort Wilderness allows visitors to bring their own RV or tent and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the campground. The campsites are well-equipped with amenities such as water, electricity, and sewer hookups, as well as picnic tables and charcoal grills. As mentioned, there are other options for staying near the Disney parks. It can easily get to be overwhelming, so I will explain each of the additional options. 

Good Neighbor Hotels 

Staying at a Walt Disney World Good Neighbor Hotel has its own set of benefits. Good Neighbor Hotels are third-party hotels that have partnered with Disney to offer quality accommodations for guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort. While they may not offer the same level of immersive theming and on-site perks as Disney-owned hotels, there are still several advantages to choosing a Good Neighbor Hotel for your stay.

One of the main benefits is often a more affordable price compared to staying at an official Disney resort. Good Neighbor Hotels can provide cost-effective accommodation options, allowing families to enjoy the Disney experience while potentially saving money on lodging.

Additionally, many Good Neighbor Hotels offer convenient shuttle services to the Disney parks, providing a hassle-free transportation option for guests. Some may also offer other transportation options, such as scheduled shuttle service to the parks, which can save time and eliminate the need for rental cars or parking fees.

While not directly affiliated with Disney, these hotels still strive to provide a positive guest experience and may offer packages or special deals that include perks like early park entry or dining discounts.

The best Walt Disney World resorts for families out of the Good Neighbor options in our opinion are the Swan and Dolphin. The location and benefits are amazing- though we don’t love the resort and parking fees.

Other Hotels 

There are seemingly endless hotels and resorts in close proximity to Walt Disney World; many are not affiliated in any way and will not receive perks in the parks, but it could still be a good option depending on your needs. 

Offsite, non-Disney affiliated hotels could be helpful if you are only spending 1-2 days at Disney parks and exploring other areas of Orlando or Florida while visiting. 

Vacation Rentals 

There are very cool, well-themed vacation homes around Walt Disney World. These houses are usually a good option for extended families who may need 12+ bedrooms and want to share a home while on their next Disney vacation. Oftentimes, these resorts are a decent driving distance from the parks, and may not be able to receive the full resort benefits of the neighborhood of the rental. In my opinion, rental homes are a much less “Disney” option in many cases. 

The Best Walt Disney World Resorts for Families 

I highly recommend staying at one of the best Disney World Hotels on this list to set yourself up for the best Disney World vacation. While every resort has its pros and cons, there is a perfect Disney resort out there for every family vacation. 

Value: Art of Animation can not be beat when it comes to theming and a great pool for kids! With a stroller, the skyliner is ideal!

Moderate: Caribbean Beach is on the skyliner, and has great pools, a fun splash pad, and good dining options on the property. 

Deluxe: This is where it gets tough! If you can book a resort in this price category, I highly recommend reading through this guide and determining which is the best fit for your family specifically…however, I will still provide my recommendation. 

Beach Club! After a fun park day, this pool with the sandy bottom is really fun for kids and feels like a true vacation resort. We also love EPCOT and the highlight of a long day in the park is being able to avoid all transportation and walk back to your resort. 

I will say though, if your kids are older, Animal Kingdom Lodge is an incredible experience. I just don’t love having to take a bus everywhere.
