Most people hear “Orlando” and think either Disney World or Harry Potter (at Universal Studios), others may think of Seaworld or Legoland Florida, but there is actually so much more to see within an hour or so’s drive. There are fun cities around Disney World to either fill some of your vacation time, or plan a trip outside of the theme park bubble. When deciding on a location to stay for your overall vacation, I highly recommend staying on the property if you are visiting Walt Disney World or Universal, if you have time outside of the parks planned for the beginning or end of your trip, this post will provide insight on how to plan your itinerary to suit your families needs.

  • Walt Disney World is actually not in the city of Orlando but Southwest of the Downtown Orlando area. 
  • The region is known for its multitude of freshwater springs, offering opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking in crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re looking for unique attractions, free activities, or great dining options, the cities within 45 miles of Walt Disney World have something for everyone. In this blog post, I’ll take you through some of the popular cities around Disney World, including the attractions, free things to do, where to eat, and information on how to get there from Walt Disney World.

Let’s kick off with a list of large cities around Disney World. These cities are grander in things to do and may be more spread out than the others.

Greater Orlando Area

The Greater Orlando area is approximately 10 minutes away from Walt Disney World. There are lots of things to do, many entertainment options and major attractions in the local area of Orlando that may not seem as obvious.

Celebration, FL

Celebration, FL, is a charming town just a ten minutes away from Walt Disney World. The Walt Disney Company originally developed the town. The town’s picturesque downtown area, with its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Previously voted one of the prettiest neighborhoods in the US, this would be a great way to spend a day outside of the theme park chaos.

Cocoa, Florida

Cocoa is located approximately 50 miles east of Walt Disney World, which is about an hour’s drive away. This is the furthest away city on the list, but for good reason! This area is home to Port Canaveral and is one of the closest beaches to Walt Disney World.

  • Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex: Explore space shuttle Atlantis, visit the Saturn V Center, and experience interactive exhibits about space exploration.
  • Cocoa Beach: Enjoy a day of sun, sand, and surf at the beautiful Cocoa Beach, known for its wide sandy shore and famous pier.

  • Go to the Aerial Adventure Park: complete the ropes course, see above the tree line and learn about the wildlife in the area.

Altamonte Springs is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Walt Disney World. Depending on traffic, the drive usually takes around 30-45 minutes.

  • Altamonte Mall – A popular shopping destination with a variety of stores and dining options.

A few other things to look into when looking for something to do outside of the Disney Theme Parks:

  • Spend a day at Mirada Lagoon. A manmade lagoon with water activities and a large sandy beach. Located in the master-planned community in San Antonio, Florida, a day pass here is sure to be a ideal place to relax for a day. 
  • Visit Daytona Beach. You can walk along the boardwalk, relax on the beach, explore one of the many popular stores or tour the Daytona racetrack. 
  • Visit the Gulf Coast. Just over an hour from Walt Disney World you will find, Tampa, Clearwater, St Petersburg and more. 
  • Take a road trip to one of the nearby springs!
  • Book a tee time at one of the world-class golf courses! As someone who doesn’t play golf, I can’t recommend one, but I have many friends and family members who have found amazing options in close proximity to Disney. 
  • Look into the benefits offered at your resort! If you are staying at one of the onsite resort hotels, you will likely find great recreational facilities, tennis courts, potentially water parks, and green spaces making it the great option when staying nearby.

Exploring the cities within 45 miles of Walt Disney World provides a diverse range of experiences for visitors looking to discover more of the Orlando area. Whether you’re interested in outdoor activities, historical exploration, or simply enjoying great food, these cities offer something for everyone just a short drive away from the magic of Walt Disney World.
