Getting To Costa Rica

Costa Rica is well-equipped with two national airports strategically located in different areas of the country. When planning your flights, knowing that you can consider both your arrival and final destination is reassuring. For instance, we landed at the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia and departed from the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, a convenient way to plan our route based on airports. 

If you plan to visit Costa Rica before or after a neighboring country, you could also cross the border in either Nicaragua or Panama. 

To get around within Costa Rica, you could plan a guided tour to various areas or consider a rental car. Look into the requirements if you will be driving yourself around the country, and the parking cost if you stay in resorts, but in my opinion, the flexibility is absolutely worth it! 

Areas of Costa Rica

Costa Rica boasts several popular tourist cities that attract visitors from across the globe. There are seven provinces within the country, with several being a great option for your travels depending on your expectations. 

The Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica is known for its stunning Pacific coastlines, beautiful beaches, and dry tropical forests. It’s a great destination for those looking to experience a mix of beach relaxation, wildlife encounters, and outdoor adventures.

Popular areas within the province are: 

• Liberia is the main city in the province and home to one of the country’s two national airports
• Tamarindo, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, offers the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement, as well as surfing
• La Cruz is the capital of the region and offers many excursions and tourist attractions 
• Playa Hermosa has miles and beaches with calm waters perfect for the entire family
• Playa Conchal is known for clear waters, snorkeling and swimming

The Alajuela Province in Costa Rica is a diverse and vibrant region that offers a wide range of attractions and experiences for visitors. The province is known for its stunning natural beauty. Visitors to Alajuela can also explore charming towns and villages, experience traditional Costa Rican culture, and enjoy outdoor adventures such as hiking, birdwatching, and zip-lining. There is much to see in San José but the top two attractions would be the Poas Volcano National Park and the Central Valley. Poas Volcano is an active stratovolcano with one of the world’s largest volcanic craters. Central Valley, is where visitors can discover coffee plantations, botanical gardens, and eco-friendly resorts. When To Visit Costa Rica 

Costa Rica has a tropical climate in Central America so while there is a dry season, the weather could change quickly at all times of the year. However, that shouldn’t stop you from visiting. The rainforests are a big reason to visit this amazing state! With that in mind, the dry season is typically December through April, which is also high season for prices. The rainy season has its benefits like being more affordable and a better chance at seeing various types of wildlife. 

Each city in Costa Rica offers a unique and unforgettable experience for every type of traveler. Depending on what you want to do and see while visiting Costa Rica, I would suggest choosing two locations for two different experiences. For example, a few days near the beach and a few days near the volcano will give you a variety of options and you will be able to see different parts of the country. 

Great Day Trips to Consider

There are a few incredible experiences that everyone should see while they are in Costa RIca. While I recommend staying in the area of these destinations for a few days, rather than a quick visit, I know that isn’t always possible. So consider these great places for at least one day! 

The Arenal Volcano

One of the most iconic and active volcanoes in the country. It had been dormant for hundreds of years before suddenly erupting in 1968. This event resulted in widespread devastation and reshaped the surrounding landscape, leaving a lasting impact on the region.

Today, the Arenal Volcano area offers visitors a host of attractions and activities. One of the most popular attractions is the Arenal Volcano National Park, which provides opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and witnessing the volcano’s impressive silhouette. The park is also home to diverse wildlife and lush vegetation, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

In addition to the volcano, the area boasts natural hot springs, which are a perfect way to relax and unwind while enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding rainforest. These hot springs are fed by geothermal waters, creating a luxurious and soothing experience for visitors.

Best Places to Stay in Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers a wide variety of accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets. I was very surprised (and slightly overwhelmed) when planning where to stay in Costa Rica for the first time. There are so many options- I wanted to experience them all! 

However, we were only there for 10 days, so we had to be picky; however, I have an even better idea of where I want to stay for our return trip!
