• Less Time In Your Room: We usually opt for a room with a balcony, though I don’t feel like it’s necessary for a shorter cruise. We are perfectly fine with an inside cabin or a porthole room since we are usually out and about! Save the extra money for bibbidi bobbidi boutique! 
• Explore New Ships: Disney is on a roll with a new ship schedule, and as they are launching each ship, they almost all have had a few short itinerary options, though they aren’t frequent. One of the best ways to see a glimpse of the newest Disney innovations and ship designs is to sail on a shorter cruise. I only recommend this if you are an avid Disney sailor though, otherwise a more extended cruise may be better! 
• Non-stop Fun For Kids: Whether your kids are in the Small World Nursery (additional cost), the teen club Edge, or exploring the ship with you, it’s an amazing experience for them onboard.

If you determine that you will be taking a Disney 3 day cruise, you should consider a few things before booking. 

Choose the Right Ship & Itinerary

Disney Cruise Line offers various 3-day itineraries, with many departing from Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. Some of the most popular ships for a short Disney cruise include:

• Disney Wish – The newest and most innovative ship design, filled with immersive dining experiences and thrilling entertainment.
• Disney Dream – A fan favorite featuring the AquaDuck water coaster and enchanting dining options.
• Disney Magic – One of the original Disney cruise ships, offering a classic Disney experience with modern updates, excellent dining, and family-friendly entertainment.

Book Early for the Best Deals

Disney cruises are in high demand, so booking early ensures you get the best selection of staterooms and pricing. Look for special promotions and discounts if you’re flexible with dates. 

Promotions will pop up throughout the year and can include everything from booking a cruise with a reduced deposit to kids sail for a discount, or a Florida resident discounted sailing.

Check In & Plan Your Onboard Activities

With only three days onboard, prioritize your must-do activities. Disney always does an amazing job with cruise programming, it’s helpful to have an idea of the activities and experiences you will want to do when on the ship. From trivia and silent discos to Broadway shows and mixology seminars, there is something for everyone. 

It’s essential to do online check-in as soon as possible to have the best chance at reserving the experiences you want to do. Depending on your cruise line status, you can check-in between 30-40 days in advance. 

When checking in you will be able to: 

• Select your port arrival time (I always aim for as early as possible to have as much time as we can onboard!) 
• Book specialty dining (such as Palo or Enchanté, which are the adults-only restaurants) 
• Reserve spa treatments in advance to get the timing you would like 
• Sign up for character meet-and-greets and special onboard events like Olaf’s Picnic or Royal Palace Tea and the Royal Gathering 

Things To Know About A Disney Cruise

As mentioned above, there are many things to do while onboard a Disney cruise. I recommend looking into each of these as they have always been a hit for our family. 

• Sign Into The Ship’s WiFi: Once you arrive at the port, sign into the ship’s wifi and check out the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App. From here you can see the daily itinerary, “heart” the activities you would like to experience, look at the deck plans and more. 
• Understand Rotational Dining: Disney ships always have multiple dining room options for dinner, however, you will receive a dining schedule to help with the flow of guests. Check the app to see which restaurant you will visit first! 
• Kid’s Club Open House: The kids club will have an open house around 12 pm on embarkation day (your first day), this is the perfect time to register your child and explore the kids club together. My daughter never wants to leave the Oceaneer’s Club once onboard, so this is the best time to check it out if you have small children and plan on having them visit the kids club! 
• Know The Disney Characters: Each ship will have different characters onboard, look into your specific cruise to see which characters you may meet! 
• Look Into The Theme: Similar to which characters are on the ship, it’s fun to know about the themes onboard as well. For example, you will go to Worlds of Marvel or the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge on the Disney Wish or Animator’s Palate with Crush on the Disney Dream. 
• Enjoy All The Ice Cream & More: One thing Disney is extremely good at is catering to families. You will have access to free ice cream, soda, 24/7 room service, and multiple dining options throughout the cruise. 

What to Pack for a 3 Day Disney Cruise

• Swimwear and cover-ups for pool time and Castaway Cay or other port days

• Limited Time? No Problem! A Disney cruise vacation doesn’t have to be long to be magical. This itinerary is perfect for a long weekend escape.
• Budget-Friendly Option: Compared to longer cruises, a Disney 3 day cruise can be a more affordable way to experience Disney magic on the high seas. Personally, a shorter cruise is not when I would opt to go for a concierge room. 
• First-Time Cruisers: If you’re unsure about cruising, this short itinerary is an ideal introduction to Disney Cruise Line.
• Land & Sea Vacation: If you want to start in Disney World and end with a Disney cruise, without maxing out on your PTO, a shorter cruise may be perfect timing! I recommend starting your Disney adventure with 4 days in the parks. 

Disadvantages To A Disney 3 Day Cruise

Now that you know all about what it’s like to take a 3 day sailing on Disney Cruise Line, it’s helpful to understand why it may not be the best itinerary for you. 

• Packed Itinerary: As mentioned, Disney knows how to provide an amazing list of activities while onboard. Even on port days! If you want to fully relax, it may not happen with a shorter trip. To get the full Disney experience, you may feel like you have to do all the things (it’s me- hi)
  • Tip: Prioritize must-do activities and plan ahead to maximize your time
• Limited Time to Explore The Ship: Similar to the above, with only three days, it can be challenging to experience everything onboard, especially when you don’t have a day at sea. Some of our favorite things that we usually don’t get to on shorter cruises are playing the Midship Detective game, watching movies in the theaters, or booking shore excursions. 
• Higher Cost Per Day: Shorter cruises often have a higher cost per day compared to longer Disney cruises, though they are usually cheaper than longer cruises overall.
  • Tip: Look for off-peak travel times or special discounts to get the best deals.
• Fewer Dining Experiences: You may not have enough time to try all the specialty restaurants and dining options available. 
• Less Variety in Destinations: A short itinerary usually focuses on being a Bahamian cruise. It typically includes only one or two stops, such as Castaway Cay, limiting the variety of excursions and experiences.
  • Tip: Make the most of Castaway Cay by booking activities like snorkeling, biking, or relaxing in a private cabana.
• Limited Special Events: Specialty sailings, like Marvel Day at Sea, will be hosted on longer cruises, usually on 5-day itineraries. 
• Muster Drill: While this doesn’t take a ton of time, Disney again requires in-person muster drills for everyone on board, while other cruise lines are sticking with a digital check-in and go station. The good thing is that you don’t need to bring your life jackets, but it does take up a bit of your first afternoon on the ship. This would be true for all itineraries, not just a Disney 3 day cruise.
