Walt Disney World In Winter | The Best Guide To Planning

Planning a magical family trip to Walt Disney World in the winter months? While this season offers cooler temperatures and enchanting holiday displays, it also comes with its own unique considerations. But you will likely still experience many sunny days- which makes it a perfect time to visit! With some additional planning, especially focused on the weather and packing, you could have a magical vacation with lower crowds.

Disney World in Winter Christmas Decorations On The Castle

To ensure your vacation goes off without a hitch, here’s everything your family should research before heading to the most magical place on Earth.

Also- ALL photos in this post were taken in Disney World in Winter, between the end of November (which I know is technically still fall) and March. It just goes to show how different the weather could be depending on your experience, even within one day!

Best Times to Visit Disney World in Winter

Winter crowd levels at Walt Disney World vary greatly depending on the specific dates you choose, but I definitely think there is a sweet spot during the winter season. Here’s a breakdown of crowd trends for November through March, though it’s important to keep in mind that crowds often change and may not be applicable at all times.

  • Early November to Early December: With the exception of the week of Thanksgiving, this is one of the best times to visit. Crowds are generally lower after the Veterans Day weekend and before mid-December, making it an ideal time for families looking to enjoy holiday festivities without overwhelming crowds.
    • Tip: Arrive early in the day to enjoy lower wait times for rides.
  • Mid-January to Mid-February: After the New Year holiday, crowds taper off significantly, making this another excellent time to visit. The cooler weather and shorter wait times create a more relaxed and great experience.
    • Tip: Avoid the MLK weekend as it can bring a temporary spike in attendance.
    • Tip: Look into the RunDisney weekend schedule to see if there is a Walt Disney World Marathon weekend around your travel dates, it’s helpful to avoid these weekends if possible.
  • Late February to Early March: Crowds begin to increase as spring break season approaches. While still manageable, aim for early February for a quieter experience. Avoiding Presidents Day weekend will be helpful to experiencing lower crowds as well.
    • Tip: Check school vacation schedules, as they can impact crowd levels during this time. In my opinion, this would be the best time to visit if you are okay with some chilly mornings and evenings.
  • Avoid Christmas and New Year’s (Mid-December to Early January): These weeks are some of the busiest of the year. Expect high crowds, long lines at most times, and sold-out park reservations (currently only applicable for Annual Passholders). While the holiday decorations and events are spectacular, patience is key.
    • Tip: If you can’t avoid this time of year, plan to visit the parks early in the morning or late in the evening for slightly reduced crowds.

By planning your trip during the low-crowd periods in early December, mid-January, or early February, your family can enjoy the magic of Disney with fewer people and more time to explore. This is especially helpful if it’s your family’s first Walt Disney World vacation!

Winter Weather in Central Florida

Florida winters are mild compared to much of the U.S., but the weather can still be unpredictable. Here’s what you need to know about the weather you may experience during your trip:

  • Daytime Temperatures: Expect average temperatures of highs in the 60s to 70s°F (15-25°C), though some days can climb into the 80s°F (27°C).
  • Evening and Early Morning Temperatures: These can drop into the 40s to 50s°F (4-10°C), especially in January and February.
  • Rain: Rainfall is less frequent in the winter, but it’s always smart to prepare for the occasional shower.
  • Wind Chill: Windy days can feel much colder, especially at outdoor attractions or while waiting for nighttime parades and fireworks.
  • Sunlight: Days are shorter, so plan accordingly to maximize daylight hours.

Pro Tip: Check the weather forecast daily during your trip. Florida’s weather can change quickly, and being prepared will save your family from discomfort.

Packing Essentials for Winter at Disney

Packing wisely can make or break your trip. While there are some items that are essential during a Disney trip between April – September, they aren’t as important in the winter. Think handheld fans, cooling towels, etc.

View the full Walt Disney World packing list for most of the year.

Here’s a list of must-haves for a winter Disney vacation:

Clothing:

  • Layers: Pack short-sleeve shirts for warmer days and sweaters or hoodies for cooler evenings. I have this zip up in multiple colors and wear it throughout Disney World in winter!
  • Jackets: Lightweight for most days, but bring a heavier jacket if visiting during a cold snap. This is my favorite jacket for winter park days.
  • Comfortable Pants: Jeans or leggings for cooler days, with the option of shorts or tennis skirts for midday warmth. These are my favorite leggings and my favorite joggers!
  • Rain Gear: A compact umbrella or poncho is essential for unexpected showers.

Accessories:

  • Hats and Gloves: Especially for nighttime events like fireworks or parades. I really love these gloves, the touchscreen part works well!
  • Blankets: Consider a small, packable blanket for evening shows, especially for younger kids. We have several of these blankets and have literally used them for over 6 years! They are perfect for in the car, in the parks, while waiting for fireworks, etc.
  • Backpack: To carry extra layers, snacks, and other essentials.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, even in cooler weather.

Footwear:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Break them in ahead of time to avoid blisters. I recommend waterproof shoes if you have them, I personally love these
  • Extra Socks: Chilly mornings and wet rides can leave your feet cold and uncomfortable.

Extras for the Parks:

  • Portable Phone Charger: Keeping your phone charged is essential for managing Multi Pass and Mobile Orders.
  • Hand Warmers: A lifesaver on unexpectedly cold days.
  • Sunscreen: Yes, you can still get sunburned in winter!
  • Lip Balm: Chilly, dry air can lead to chapped lips.

Having these items on hand ensures you’re ready for any weather surprise Disney World throws your way.

Special Events and Seasonal Offerings

Disney World in winter is brimming with special events and holiday magic. Be sure to research what will be available during your trip, such as the holiday decorations in the resorts or the themed parties in Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Where To See Holiday Decorations

Each park and resort is decked out in unique holiday themes. Depending on when you are planning your Disney World vacation, these are well worth a day to explore and see which decorations you can find. Each park will be fully decorated by mid-November, while the Disney resort hotels will usually be completely decorated by the week of Thanksgiving. With highlights like the giant gingerbread house at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and the Merry Menagerie at Animal Kingdom, something is exciting to see in every direction.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party: A Winter Wonderland

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is a must-see holiday event at Magic Kingdom. This special after-hours, ticketed celebration transforms the park into a festive wonderland, complete with holiday music, dazzling lights, and exclusive entertainment.

    • Exclusive food and beverage options are available for purchase, including themed cupcakes and seasonal drinks.
    • Pro Tip: Be sure to grab a park map when you arrive to the party, you will see examples of the festive treats and where you can get the complimentary snacks.
  • Holiday Entertainment
    • Watch enchanting stage shows like A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas or Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration, featuring singing, dancing, and beloved characters on the cattle stage.
    • Groove to holiday music at the Disney Junior Jingle Jam dance party in Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, Club Tinsel in Tomorrowland and see Santa’s Christmas Carnival in Storybook Circus.
  • Shorter Wait Times for Rides
    • With limited tickets sold, many popular rides have reduced wait times, allowing your family to enjoy favorites like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Tron with ease.
    • Don’t forget a ride on the Jingle Cruise- a fun and festival overlay of Jungle Cruise for the Christmas season.

Tips for Families:

  • Arrive early: While the party officially starts at 7 PM, ticket holders can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4 PM, giving you extra time to enjoy the park.
  • Bring layers: Evenings can get chilly, especially when waiting for the parade or fireworks.
  • Prioritize experiences: Create a list of must-do activities, as you won’t be able to do everything in one night.

If you are planning a vacation to Disney, I highly recommend staying in a Walt Disney World resort to get the best possible experience for your family! Find out which resort is most affordable, has the best perks, is the closest to the parks and more in the

Ride Closures And Refurbishments

Winter is a common time for Disney to schedule refurbishments. Check the Disney World website or fan sites for a current list of planned ride closures to avoid disappointment.

Here is a list of Walt Disney World attractions and areas currently expected to close temporarily or permanently in 2025 due to refurbishments, reimaginings, or seasonal maintenance:

Confirmed Closures

  • Dino-Rama Area in Animal Kingdom
    • Closing January 13, 2025, to begin construction on the reimagined Tropical Americas land. This includes the permanent closure of TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. However, other parts of DinoLand, U.S.A., like Dinosaur, will remain open during this phase.
  • Voyage of the Little Mermaid at Hollywood Studios
    • Permanently closed as Disney prepares for a new live-action show, “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure,” set to debut in summer 2025.
  • Test Track at EPCOT
    • Currently under refurbishment for a new theme and expected to reopen in 2025. The updated design will reflect a futuristic look inspired by GM’s history and innovations.
  • Fantasia Pool at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort
    • Scheduled for refurbishment from January to April 2025. Other pools in the resort will remain operational during this time.
  • Stormalong Bay Pool at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts
    • Undergoing maintenance from January to June 2025, but alternative pools will be available for guests.
  • Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom
    • Typically closes annually for maintenance from January through March. Expect similar downtime in 2025.

Other Potential Closures to Watch

  • It’s Tough to Be a Bug: This attraction may close later in 2025 as part of Animal Kingdom’s transition to a Zootopia-themed area, though an exact timeline is still to be confirmed.
  • Water Parks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach alternate seasonal closures each year. Check the operating schedule before your visit. It’s also possible to experience the water parks closing when visiting Disney World in winter due to cold weather.

Tip: Always verify Disney’s refurbishment calendar as your trip approaches, as closure dates may shift or new projects might be announced. You can also monitor updates on the official Disney website or reliable fan sites like WDW Magazine and Disney Food Blog.

Dining Reservations

The winter crowds make dining reservations even more competitive because of guests wanting to spend more time indoors, and having less daylight to be out and about in the park. Research restaurants that fit your family’s preferences and book reservations as soon as your 60-day booking window opens (for Disney resort guests).

  • Consider festive dining experiences, like meals with Santa or special seasonal menus at table-service restaurants.
  • If reservations are tough to get, familiarize yourself with quick-service options to save time and stress.

Photo Opportunities

Research the best spots for family photos with Disney’s Christmas decorations, Photopass props (especially during Festival of the Arts!), and more. Popular options include:

  • Cinderella Castle with its twinkling lights.
  • The Tree of Life is adorned with winter accents.
  • Beautiful Christmas displays in each country around the World Showcase in Epcot.
  • Resort lobbies with giant Christmas trees and themed displays.
  • Lightbeam Photopass backgrounds.

Transportation and Resort Planning

Research the best transportation options for navigating the parks and resorts:

  • If staying at a Disney Resort, find out if your hotel offers convenient transportation via bus, boat, monorail, or Skyliner.
  • For off-site hotels, research shuttles or budget for parking fees at the parks.
  • Consider resorts with festive theming, like Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, for a cozy winter vibe.

Additional Tips

  • Rope Drop: Arrive early to maximize low wait times in the morning.
  • Midday Breaks: Crowds peak in the afternoon, making this a great time to relax at your resort.
  • Evening Hours: Take advantage of cooler temperatures and holiday lights at night.
  • Talk About A Budget: Don’t forget to factor in the cost of winter-specific extras like holiday merchandise, event tickets, and seasonal snacks. Research which add-ons, such as Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Individual Lightning Lanes, will enhance your trip without breaking the bank.
  • Health and Safety: Winter brings flu season, so pack a travel health kit with hand sanitizer, masks, and over-the-counter medications. Research the nearest urgent care centers, just in case.
  • Download the My Disney Experience App: You can navigate so much of your vacation within the app!
  • Check Park Hours: These usually change slightly during the winter vs peak season. So it’s helpful to look into it around the week before your trip.
  • Check Your Tickets: Most tickets purchased today will be date-based tickets or in a Walt Disney Travel Company package, where you don’t need to make a park reservation in advance. However, it’s helpful to confirm based on the tickets purchased before arrival.

By thoroughly researching these aspects of your trip, you’ll be ready to handle the crowds, weather, and unique holiday offerings Disney World has to offer in the winter. With careful planning, your family will make magical memories to cherish for a lifetime.
