Meeting Characters in Epcot - Is Epcot Fun? Meet characters at this spot at Mickey & Friends

Hi there! Just a heads up- if you click on a link within this post I may receive a small commission from affiliate links. I appreciate your support of To Travel & Beyond and hope to bring you great recommendations for many years to come!

I want to start off by saying that Epcot is one of our favorite parks, and it has been for years. When we mention this to other families, their initial reaction is usually that they are surprised, because why would we love a park, without a ton of rides, as parents? I’m always more than happy to explain why all of us love it so much- young children included. After reading through this post, I hope you will be able to see why we always say YES when anyone asks “is Epcot Fun?”

All About Epcot

EPCOT, short for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, is divided into a few main areas: World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature, and World Showcase. To navigate the park, it’s helpful to understand where each of the above are located, along with how to navigate them.

  • World Celebration is the very first area you enter when you arrive by the main entrance of Epcot. Home to Spaceship Earth and all the way to the back of the front area to the right where you will find Journey Into Imagination with Figment. You can essentially say that the World Celebration area is the entire front of the park up until the Port of Entry or Disney Traders, including the middle and right sections behind Spaceship Earth.
  • World Discovery is the area behind Connections Eatery. Here you will find Cosmic Rewind, Mission: SPACE, Space 220 (one of the new restaurants in Epcot), and Test Track. This area consists of everything to the left when you walk into the front of the park.
  • World Nature is essential The Land. It includes Living with The Land, Soarin’ and everything else inside of The Land pavilion.
  • World Showcase is the most popular area within Epcot. It’s where you can drink around the world, try snacks from different countries, meet unique characters and more. This is the entire back half of the park and also includes the second entrance to the park which is called the International Gateway.

Often labeled an “adult park,” this theme park is actually, our family’s favorite park —and it’s easy to see why. It seamlessly blends entertainment, education, cultural immersion, breathtaking open spaces, and exciting attractions, making it an ideal park for visitors of all ages.

Here are a few key reasons Epcot is fun and a great way to spend a day when in Walt Disney World.

Thrilling and Family-Friendly Rides

The attractions here cater to a wide range of interests, ensuring fun for everyone. If you’re an adrenaline seeker, Cosmic Rewind is a must-ride—it’s a jaw-dropping roller coaster with exhilarating twists and turns that will leave you in awe. On the other hand, rides like Frozen Ever After deliver a magical experience the whole family can enjoy, bringing the beloved characters and songs from Frozen to life in a beautifully designed journey. Beyond these highlights, the park boasts an array of additional attractions, from soaring flight simulators to interactive adventures.

Explore the World in One Park

The World Showcase is one of the park’s standout features, allowing you to explore 11 different countries in a single trip. Each pavilion provides a rich, immersive experience, with architecture, landscapes, and decorations that transport you to that country’s essence. The culinary offerings are equally authentic, with dishes crafted to reflect traditional flavors from each nation. For character enthusiasts, you can meet Disney favorites like Mulan in China, Belle in France, or Donald Duck in Mexico, adding even more magic to the journey.

Hands-On Learning and Creativity for Kids

Families with children will appreciate the educational opportunities woven into the park’s fun. At the Kidcot Fun Stops, young explorers can collect stamps and create crafts while learning interesting facts about each featured country. It’s a great way to spark curiosity and introduce children to different cultures in a memorable, hands-on way.

Seasonal Festivals

The park also comes alive during its seasonal festivals, each offering a unique layer of excitement. From the stunning topiaries of the Flower & Garden Festival to the global culinary delights of the Food & Wine Festival, these events bring added energy and exclusive activities to the park. Seasonal menus, interactive workshops, live performances, and themed merchandise create an ever-changing experience that keeps families coming back for more.

The Iconic Spaceship Earth

No visit is complete without a stop at the park’s centerpiece, Spaceship Earth. This iconic geodesic sphere is a marvel both inside and out. During the day, it takes guests on a fascinating, slow-ride through the history of human innovation and communication. At night, it transforms into a breathtaking light display, shimmering in vivid colors and patterns that make it one of Walt Disney World’s most photographed landmarks.

A Perfect Blend of Fun and Discovery

This park truly offers something for everyone, blending thrills, culture, and family-friendly fun into one unforgettable experience. Whether you’re savoring cuisine from around the world, learning something new, or enjoying an awe-inspiring ride, it’s a place where magical memories are made every step of the way.

Let’s dive into all of the above to really give you an idea about why Epcot is one of the fun and exciting Disney theme parks to include in your vacation.

Must Know Walt Disney World Logistics

I will be honest, Disney doesn’t always make things easy, but they do make it worth it! If this is your first trip to Disney, or even if you haven’t visited in a year (especially since they shut down a few years ago during that one time that won’t be named) A LOT has changed. In order to have the best trip possible, I highly recommend paying attention to these tips.

  • Download & get to know how to use the My Disney Experience App. This app will be your best friend during your trip to Walt Disney World. You will use it to make reservations at the best restaurants, check wait times for all the rides, see the map of the park (though paper maps are still available as well!) check the minimum heigh requirement for rides prior to getting to the entrance just for your child to be let down…not that I am mentioning it from experience.
  • Understand the different parks. There are four different parks within Walt Disney World, each with their own unique theming and offering. Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are all within 15-20 minutes of each other, and all of the Walt Disney World resorts.
  • Take a look at transportation options. Depending on where you are staying, there may be various transportation options included. If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort, free transportation between your resort and the park is included. It’s helpful to know which transportation is utilized to go where.
  • Understand the options to “skip-the-line” in Disney World with either Multi-Pass or Single Pass. Multi Pass will give you “skip the lane” access to many of the popular rides with timed entry, while some rides will only have the option for a Single Pass which means to pick a return time to ride that specific ride. Both are an additional cost. (This was previously known as Disney Genie +). You could also consider purchasing the Multi Pass Premier which includes access to the MP rides at any time, once per day, in a designated park.
  • Should you book a VIP tour? A personalized, guided experience that offers exclusive access to the parks, helping guests make the most of their visit. With a VIP tour, guests receive a private guide who tailors the tour to their interests, preferences, and the size of their group.
  • Be prepared to get a virtual queue for specific rides at 7am. A virtual queue is a system that allows guests to “reserve” a spot in line for a popular attraction or experience without physically waiting in the traditional standby line. Instead of waiting in a long line, guests can enjoy other areas of the park until it’s their time to return for the ride or event.

Things to Do in EPCOT

Rides

Thrill Rides

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (World Discovery) A high-energy indoor roller coaster with stunning visuals and a rocking soundtrack, this is a must for thrill-seekers. This is the BEST ride in all of Walt Disney World and because of that, it’s also one of the most popular rides in Disney World. As of the time writing this post in early 2025, you will need a virtual queue to ride. Be sure to read the important logistics above to know how to secure your queue. If you get motion sick, I suggest preparing yourself and asking for the front car.
  2. Test Track (World Discovery) Design your own car and then speed through an exhilarating outdoor course. (currently closed for refurbishment, should be opening later in 2025)

Family-Friendly Rides

  1. Frozen Ever After (World Showcase, Norway Pavilion) A magical boat ride through Arendelle with beloved characters and songs from Frozen. Be ready to belt it out to Let It Go!
  2. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (World Showcase, France Pavilion) Epcot’s newest ride is a trackless dark ride where you shrink down to the size of a rat and join Remy in this fun and exciting 4D adventure.

This attraction offers colorful visuals, catchy music, and a lighthearted storyline, making it perfect for families and guests of all ages. The best part of this ride is right at the beginning when you ride through the water next to San Angel Restaurant. It’s such a beautiful view!

  2. Soarin’ Around the World (World Nature) A breathtaking hang-gliding experience over famous global landmarks.

Character Meet and Greets

It’s often assumed that Epcot has a limited number of characters, and while compared to Magic Kingdom, you will find less – there are still plenty of great experiences to be found! And some characters you won’t find anywhere else within the Walt Disney World theme parks. The following characters can be found around the park in Epcot.

  1. Mickey and Friends (World Celebration) Meet Mickey Mouse and some of his closest friends in their classic attire at the EPCOT Character Spot.
  2. Anna and Elsa (World Showcase, Norway Pavilion) Step into the Royal Sommerhus to meet the famous sisters from Frozen in their cozy Scandinavian home.
  3. Donald (World Showcase, Mexico Pavilion) Meet Donald in his Sombrero outside of the Mexico pavilion.

  5. Princesses Around Epcot’s World Showcase Meet beloved Disney princesses like Belle in France, Jasmine in Morocco, Mulan in China, and Snow White in Germany as they greet guests in their respective pavilions.
  6. Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins (World Showcase, UK Pavilion) Alice and Mary Poppins rotate meeting times within the UK.
  7. Star Lord (World Discovery) frequently appears as part of Cosmic Rewind attraction’s immersive experience, where you can sometimes spot him and other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the area around the ride.

KidCot Fun Stops

KidCot Fun Stops offer a fun and interactive way for children to engage with the cultures of the World Showcase. Each pavilion hosts a station where kids can collect a stamp and create a personalized souvenir while learning interesting facts about the country. These stops are available in:

  1. Mexico Pavilion
  2. Norway Pavilion
  3. China Pavilion
  4. Germany Pavilion
  5. Italy Pavilion
  6. The American Adventure Pavilion
  7. Japan Pavilion
  8. Morocco Pavilion
  9. France Pavilion
  10. United Kingdom Pavilion
  11. Canada Pavilion

We always take time to let the kids color at some of the stations while we plan the rest of our day, make ride reservations, or even just relax. We also enjoy talking to the cast members in each country and asking them about where they are from.

Playgrounds, Children’s Activities & Room To Run

EPCOT offers plenty of opportunities for kids to play and explore beyond the rides and shows. Here are some of the best playgrounds and interactive areas for children:

The Aquarium at The Seas with Nemo & Friends This aquarium is a great place to run around and explore, and it even has a small play area focused on sharks.

Playground near Connections Café and Eatery This outdoor play area is perfect for kids to burn off some energy while parents relax nearby. It’s centrally located, making it an easy stop during your day.

Project Tomorrow (Interactive Area After Spaceship Earth) Located at the exit of Spaceship Earth, this indoor space features fun and educational interactive games that highlight futuristic technology and innovation.

Indoor Play Area at Mission: SPACE At the exit of Mission: SPACE, kids can enjoy an indoor playspace with engaging games and activities that allow them to explore space and science in a hands-on way.

Splash Pad Near Test Track This splash pad provides a refreshing way for little ones to cool off, with water jets and fountains located in the Future World East area, near Test Track.

Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana As mentioned, this interactive walkthrough experience allows kids to engage with water in a playful and educational manner.

Club Cool Located near Connections Café, Club Cool is a refreshing spot where kids and adults alike can sample Coca-Cola products from around the world. It’s a fun and unique experience to taste a variety of flavors, some of which might surprise you!

Dining

EPCOT’s dining scene is unparalleled. World Showcase offers authentic cuisines from 11 countries, while the park’s seasonal festivals bring limited-time food booths with creative dishes.

  • There are plenty of amazing quick service options around the park. Some of our favorites are Connections Eatery, La Cantina de San Angel, and Katsura Grill.
  • If you are looking for a spot to relax and enjoy a delicious table service restaurant, I have you covered. Space 220 can’t be missed!

EPCOT’s Four Festivals

EPCOT hosts four annual festivals, each adding its own flavor to the park experience. I wouldn’t exactly say you should plan your vacation around when a specific Epcot festival will take place, but I have been known to do just that. Some festivals are better than others, but there is something for everyone at any of the festivals! If you are looking for everything you need to know about the 2025 Festivals in Epcot, check out this guide!

Tips for Making the Most of Your EPCOT Visit

  • Arrive Early: Start your day with popular rides. I suggest either heading to Frozen Ever After or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure as your first ride.
  • Use Multi Pass: Save time in line for top attractions if you have the budget! Be sure to book your rides 7-days in advance for the best picks and the potential to avoid most of the long lines.
  • Plan Your Dining: Make reservations for table-service restaurants and plan ahead for festival booths.
  • Explore World Showcase: Take your time to enjoy the shops, entertainment, and dining options in each pavilion.
  • Know Your Entrance: Will you be arriving through the front gate (monorail, buses and parking) or International Gateway (skyliner or one of the Epcot area resorts).
  • Stay for Harmonious: Don’t miss this stunning nighttime spectacular over World Showcase Lagoon.
  • Stay Hydrated! Even if you aren’t drinking around the world, Epcot is less shaded than other parks, which is helpful to know when planning a Florida vacation. There are plenty of places around the park to get free ice water.  I also recommend bringing a great water bottle!

So, is EPCOT fun? I hope after reading this post you plan a trip to the park so you can come back and say YES! It absolutely is! With its blend of thrilling attractions, cultural immersion, and world-class dining, EPCOT offers an experience that appeals to all ages. Whether you’re visiting for the rides, the festivals, or just to eat your way around the world, EPCOT is a must-visit destination during your Walt Disney World vacation.
