Polynesian Monorail Guide – Disney Resort Transportation

One of the best perks to staying at one of the Magic Kingdom area Disney resorts is being on the monorail loop. While we easily have a top choice favorite, you almost can’t go wrong with starting your day taking the monorail to either Epcot or Magic Kingdom.

If you haven’t heard about Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, it’s one of the most beloved resorts at Walt Disney World, offering a tropical escape with lush landscapes, stunning views of the Seven Seas Lagoon, and convenient access to the Walt Disney World Monorail system. 

One of the biggest perks of staying at this resort is the Polynesian monorail, which provides seamless transportation to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and other places like the Grand Floridian for resort hopping.

Located along the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon, Disney’s Polynesian Resort is one of three monorail resorts at the Walt Disney World resort property. This deluxe resort immerses guests in a South Pacific paradise with tiki-themed décor, delicious dining options like ‘Ohana and Kona Cafe, and direct access to the resort monorail stops. 

Whether you’re staying in a standard room, the new island tower, or one of the luxurious overwater bungalows, the Polynesian monorail service is a major convenience for getting around the parks with ease.

Here’s everything you need to know about using the Polynesian monorail during your stay.

Where Can You Take the Polynesian Monorail?

The Polynesian monorail connects guests to several key locations within Walt Disney World, making it one of the most efficient ways to travel. Here’s where you can go:

• Magic Kingdom: The monorail makes a stop at Magic Kingdom, making it a quick and hassle-free way to enter the park.
• Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa: The next stop after the Polynesian, perfect for those with dining reservations at one of the incredible dinner locations, or wanting to explore another monorail resort.
• The Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC): Guests can transfer to the EPCOT monorail here, providing an easy route to another park.
• Disney’s Contemporary Resort: The first stop after Magic Kingdom, ideal for those visiting dining locations like California Grill or Chef Mickey’s.

Logistics of the Polynesian Monorail

The Polynesian monorail runs approximately every 5-10 minutes, providing continuous service throughout the day. Operating hours typically start about one hour before Magic Kingdom opens and continues for up to an hour after the park closes. 

You will board the Polynesian monorail for the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House. Here you will have a security checkpoint line to pass through, which is a huge benefit rather than going through the general security at either Magic Kingdom or Epcot, and then you can board from the monorail platform. Completely skipping security at the park! 

The EPCOT monorail from the Transportation Center generally follows similar hours, allowing for seamless travel between the two parks.

During peak times, like early mornings and park closing, the resort monorail line can get busy, so plan accordingly. If the line is too long, an alternative is walking to the Transportation and Ticket Center, which is about a 5-minute walk from the Polynesian if you are in the Moorea or Pago Pago buildings, and boarding the EPCOT or express monorail from there.

There are two monorail lines:

• Express Monorail: direct service between Magic Kingdom and the TTC. No stops at resorts.
• Resort Line: service between all Magic Kingdom resorts, TTC, and Magic Kingdom.

Is the Polynesian Monorail the Best Option for You?

Using the Polynesian monorail is an excellent choice for guests staying at the Polynesian Disney resort hotel, especially those planning frequent visits to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT. Here are a few things to consider:

• Convenience: The Polynesian monorail provides an effortless way to reach Magic Kingdom without needing a car or bus.
• Accessibility: The monorail is wheelchair and stroller-friendly, making it a great option for families. Not having to fold the stroller is IDEAL for parents!
• Alternatives: If the monorail is busy, boats and walking paths offer additional transportation options to Magic Kingdom and the Transportation Center. See below for more details on alternate modes of getting to the parks.
• Park Hopping: If you plan to visit EPCOT after Magic Kingdom, taking the monorail from the Transportation Center makes it simple.

The Polynesian monorail is a major perk of staying at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, offering guests quick, reliable, and scenic transportation to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and nearby monorail resorts. 

Pro Tip: If you like to have an early morning when in Disney and plan to head to the parks to rope drop, the monorail is your best option! For Magic Kingdom, I suggest arriving at the monorail station 70 minutes before the posted early entry time. 

Other Transportation Options

Depending on where you are heading, you may need to take another transportation method as the Polynesian or the rail service does not go everywhere within the Walt Disney World property. 

• Bus: You will have bus options for Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, both waterparks (Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach) and Disney Springs. If there is inclement weather, you will be offered a bus to Magic Kingdom and Epcot as well. 
• Ferry Boats & Boats: Boats to Magic Kingdom are offered from the beach side of the resort, or you can take the Ferry Boat from the transportation center. 
• Walking Path: There are two walking path options, one to the Transportation Center (5-15 minutes depending on your room location) to get to the Epcot line, and another from the Polyneisian to the Grand Floridian (10-20 minutes depending on your room location), which you can then continue on to Magic Kingdom park (35-45 minutes depending on your room location). 
• Minnie Vans: Availible for a fee through the Lyft app. Minnie Van service is an option if you would like direct, private transportation within Walt Disney World property. Vehicles equipped with two car seats, a cast member driving you around, and service to wherever you want to go on property. 

Whether you’re looking for efficiency, accessibility, or just a fun way to travel around Walt Disney World, the resort monorail line is a fantastic option to consider. Be sure to plan your rides around peak times for the smoothest experience!

Something I love about monorail access is that you don’t have to be a Disney guest at the Polynesian, or any of the Disney hotels! You can visit the resorts at any time. However, without a dining reservation at a resort, you will need to park at a theme park or the Transportation Center.
