Zurich Christmas Market Guide 2025 – Best Tips For Families
When planning our Christmas Market trip around Europe, I knew we needed to stop in Switzerland. The Zurich Christmas Market experience may not be at the top of the most recommended lists, but we had a great experience, and I would absolutely return to spend even more time there!

After visiting Switzerland for the first time, I was truly captivated, and it quickly became my favorite country- I still have so much more to see! This visit during Christmas time sealed the deal of the beauty and grace that is Zurich. It’s basically the city version of Miss Congeniality.
If you are planning a trip to visit Christmas markets in Switzerland or nearby European countries, Zurich should be on your list, and I am excited to share why. It’s a great place to enjoy everything European markets have to offer, and you can get started right from the main railway station!
When planning a trip to see European Christmas Markets, there are a few details you need to think through before narrowing down which cities you will visit. I deep dive the process in my guide to planning a Christmas market trip, but to give a quick summary:
- Dates. Not all markets are open during the same dates, even within the same city. Some markets open earlier, while other more intricate markets in that city may open a bit later.
- Navigation. Getting between cities takes some planning, we found that trains weren’t as frequent in the winter as they were when we traveled around in Summer and Fall.
- Location. This is obviously a big one. There are many nearby cities to Zurich, which made it an easy stop on our itinerary, but if we would have been coming from a different direction, Zurich wouldn’t have made sense.
With all of this in mind, I truly think Zurich is an amazing city to visit no matter the time of year, especially during Christmas! The Christmas spirit is in full force and the picturesque Old Town is absolutely charming.
Why Add Zurich To Your Christmas Market Itinerary?
One of the many charm-filled reasons the Zurich Christmas Market feels so special is its location against the enchanting backdrop of the city’s historic Old Town. Wandering through the markets, you’ll catch sight of centuries-old buildings adorned with festive lights and decorations, merging the old-world charm with the vibrant holiday spirit.
This setting offers a visual feast that feels both cozy and timeless.
The narrow cobblestone streets winding through Old Town add a storybook quality to your exploration, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a winter fairy tale. Many of the market’s stalls form a natural part of this historic scenery, nestled between picturesque squares and beautiful architecture. It’s the kind of place where every corner is going to make you feel the spirit of the festive season.
Visiting the markets here also allows you to get some holiday shopping done while having a great cultural and festive experience, as you can take a detour to explore nearby museums, churches, or cafes tucked inside centuries-old buildings.
From late November through December, the city hosts several charming Christmas markets, each offering its own unique atmosphere, entertainment, and delicious treats. Whether you’re visiting with kids or exploring as a couple, Zurich’s Christmas markets are sure to spark holiday magic for everyone.
When Do The Christmas Markets in Zurich Open?
There are Christmas and holiday festivities taking place around Zurich between November 6th, 2025 – January 31st, 2026, however, every market has their own opening and closing dates. Be sure to check below and on the official Switzerland site to see exactly when the individual Zurich markets will be open in 2025.
Most of Zurich’s markets open in late November and run until December 23 or 24, depending on the location. Hours typically range from 11 am to 9 pm, though some close earlier on Sundays. Always double-check dates on the official website for the year of your visit, as they can vary slightly.
Where are The Zurich Christmas Markets?
There are a variety of markets around (and above!) Zurich and each of them offer a slightly different experience. No matter which markets you visit, you will likely find Christmas carols, local products, the scent of cinnamon, festive mugs, and basically feel transported to a Christmas village.
From a singing Christmas tree market, to smaller markets, it’s helpful to understand where each market is located and what they are known for.
What we loved most about the Zurich markets is how focused they were on small businesses. After visiting markets in several countries, this was the most diverse offering of handmade goods – which we really enjoyed!
I bought a few Christmas gifts while we were there, and also found a few of the artisans online to buy gifts in the future. If only my suitcase was like Mary Poppins bag so I could fit more!
Zurich Sechseläutenplatz
This was my favorite Christmas market in Zurich. It was one of the largest markets, located directly in front of the Opera House.
- Location: Sechseläutenplatz, near Lake Zurich
- Vibe: Lively and modern, with stunning lake views and a cozy Christmas village feel.
- Highlights: Dozens of wooden chalets selling local goods, gourmet food, and mulled wine. With large “beer garden” style food stalls, chalets for hanging out and enjoying a warm drink, and artisanal goods for purchase. There is also a large igloo for fondue, a carousel for kids, and occasional live music performances.
- Family Tip: Come in the late afternoon to enjoy the lights twinkling over the lake as the sun sets – and bring gloves and hats!
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 23rd, 2025
Old Town Christmas Market (Niederdorf)
This market is known to be the most romantic market in Zurich, which basically meant smaller, quaint seating areas, smaller booths and lots of twinkling lights. There weren’t as many stalls, but it was quiet and peaceful.
- Location: Niederdorfstrasse and Hirschenplatz in the Old Town
- Vibe: Historic and storybook-perfect. Cobblestone streets, fairy lights, and cozy wooden huts make this one of Zurich’s most atmospheric markets. This is Zurich’s oldest Christmas market, and it’s in the heart of Zurich Old Town!
- What to Expect: Handmade ornaments, candles, knitwear, and artisanal gifts. Street performers and carolers add to the festive charm.
- Family Tip: Grab a mug of hot chocolate for the kids and wander the narrow streets – there are plenty of cafés to warm up in. We loved strolling through this market, turning down the beautiful streets and enjoying the Old Town atmosphere. The market size was perfect for it’s location.
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 23rd, 2025
Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Train Station
Located within the Zurich main station, this is one of Europe’s largest indoor Christmas markets – yay for a break from the cold!
If you are simply traveling through Zurich during Christmas Market season, you could hop off the train, store your luggage and explore this market easily, before heading to your next destination. It’s absolutely beautiful and so charming.
- Location: Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station)
- Highlights: As mentioned, this is one of Europe’s largest indoor Christmas markets – and perfect for families escaping cold weather! The centerpiece is a breathtaking 50-foot Christmas tree decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals. Seeing the Christmas tree alone is reason enough to stop by this market.
- What to Expect: Around 140 stalls selling gifts, handmade crafts, Swiss chocolates, and warm treats like raclette and bratwurst.
- Family Tip: This market is stroller-friendly and ideal for visiting if you’re arriving in Zurich by train – it’s literally in the station.
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 24th, 2025
Münsterhof Christmas Market
This is a smaller market, but my daughter would say it’s her second favorite because they had the best food- honestly, we liked this one because they had the shortest lines at the food stalls!
To be completely transparent, the lack of lines was likely due to the overall vibe though, it felt more thrown together than the other markets, and wasn’t as charming and festive.
So keep that in mind if you aren’t able to visit all of the markets- this one is worth skipping.
- Location: In front of Fraumünster Church
- Vibe: While it was meant to give a smaller feel, it was maybe more geared towards locals (my opinion).
- What to Expect: Gourmet foods, handmade jewelry, local wines, and Zurich specialties.
- Family Tip: It’s smaller and less crowded, making it great for younger kids or families who prefer a quieter stroll.
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 24th, 2025
Christmas Market at Werdmühleplatz (the Singing Christmas Tree)
We missed out on seeing this market and I am still sad about it! It’s known to be one of the most unique and fun Zurich Christmas market experiences, but the timing didn’t work out during our visit.
I highly recommend checking the schedules in advance and trying to plan around when you could see a performance!
- Location: Werdmühleplatz, near Bahnhofstrasse
- Vibe: Musical and heartwarming – known to be one of Zurich’s most unique traditions!
- Highlight: A multi-tiered “singing Christmas tree” where local choirs stand in formation and sing holiday carols several times a day.
- Family Tip: Check the choir performance schedule in advance – it’s a must-see moment for kids and adults alike. We will definitely be back to check it out!
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 23rd, 2025
Zürcher Weihnachtsallee (Europaallee Christmas Market)
This is a newer market and we unfortunately didn’t have the chance to visit, so I can’t speak to my personal experience, but I did read a lot about it while prepping this post!
- Location: Europaallee, next to Zurich Main Station
- Vibe: Trendy and modern, with a cozy community atmosphere perfect for families and locals
- Highlights: This newer addition to Zurich’s Christmas scene stretches along the stylish Europaallee district, offering a blend of artisanal goods, designer gifts, sustainable products, and gourmet street food. It’s especially popular among younger crowds and families who appreciate a relaxed yet festive vibe.
- Entertainment: Expect live music, pop-up performances, and craft workshops, which are ideal for children. The beautifully lit trees and wide pedestrian walkways make it stroller-friendly and easy to navigate.
- Family Tip: This market is a great spot for an evening visit after exploring the Christkindlimarkt inside the main station – they’re just a short walk apart, so you can enjoy both without extra travel. Grab a cup of hot cocoa, watch a live band, and soak up the neighborhood’s contemporary charm.
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 23rd, 2025
Zurich Convention Center
High above the city of Zurich, Kongresshaus Zürich, hosts a beautiful Christmas village style market with beautiful illuminations, cozy chalets, and plenty of activities from curling to fondue experiences. It’s a breathtaking location to see the views from above, especially when it’s snowy- which is likely in December!
- Location: Kongresshaus Zürich, next to Bürkliplatz and Lake Zurich
- Vibe: Stylish and modern, with a touch of luxury. This market blends festive charm with Zurich’s elegant lakefront ambiance.
- Highlights: Beautifully decorated indoor and outdoor stalls offering handcrafted gifts, local delicacies, and gourmet street food. The atmosphere is stunning with warm lighting, live performances, and panoramic lake views.
- Special Feature: Families can enjoy the indoors for a bit as well, perfect for warming up on snowy days, while adults appreciate the selection of artisanal Swiss products and premium wines.
- Family Tip: Stop by the nearby Bürkliplatz tram stop – it’s a quick and scenic walk along the lake to reach the market.
- 2025 Dates: November 20th – December 24th, 2025

Zurich Christmas Market Kid-Friendly Experiences
If you’re visiting Zurich’s Christmas Market with kids, you’ll appreciate how welcoming and accommodating the space is for younger visitors. There are several attractions like carousel rides, puppet theaters, and craft workshops that allow children to engage with the holiday spirit through fun and creative activities.
We loved the amount of “street performers”, especially at the Zurich Sechseläutenplatz (Opera House) market.
The craft workshops are a particularly lovely touch, as kids get to make their own Christmas decorations or cards while parents relax nearby. These activities not only keep little hands busy but also create wonderful keepsakes to remember the trip.
It’s a nice way to include younger ones in festive traditions that might otherwise feel more adult-focused.
Additionally, the market’s layout includes child-friendly zones that are easy to monitor and navigate, keeping things stress-free for parents. This felt really special and enhanced the sense of community and making the market feel truly inclusive and lively for visitors of every age.
Things To Do in Zurich in the Winter
Outside of the Christmas markets, there is still a lot to see and do in Zurich in the winter.
Entertainment and Family Activities
The entertainment isn’t only for children though, there are a variety of options for everyone- with and without kids in tow.
- Ice Skating: The rink at Sechseläutenplatz is the most popular, but smaller rinks pop up around the city.
- Choir Performances: Don’t miss the Singing Christmas Tree – shows are usually in the afternoon and evening.
- Light Displays: Wander along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s main shopping street, to see the stunning “Lucy” light installation. We also enjoyed walking along the water to see the lights sparkling from the decorated boats in the harbor.
- Speciality Market Stalls: There are specialty stalls in many of the markets, the Fondue Chalet being one of the must-try’s. Nearly every market has their own version of a Fondue restaurant, and most of them are designed as a “pop-up” experience. From the beautiful chalet style by the Münsterhof market, to the large Igloo near the Opera House. It’s a must to try at least one of them!
Tours and Experiences to Book
Outside of the Christmas markets, there is still a lot to see and do in Zurich in the winter.
- Zurich Christmas Market Tour: Guided walking tours are available and cover the best markets, including tastings of Swiss specialties like fondue and Glühwein (mulled wine). If you are traveling with a few people, this tour is a great option for a private guided experience.
- Fondue Tram: A cozy tram that serves fondue as it circles Zurich’s old town. If you do one experience during your Zurich Christmas market tour- make it this one. We would have loved to try it, but it sold out quickly during our dates. I’ve heard amazing things about the experience, especially with the festive views. It’s open until February if you make it to Zurich in the winter, outside of the Christmas season.
- Chocolate Tours: Visit Lindt for chocolate-making tours and workshops – great for kids and adults alike. We loved this tour, it was fun and informative, and very tasty at the end!
- Lake Zurich Boat Rides: Special Christmas cruises run during the season, complete with festive menus and music.
- Day Trips: Families can take a short train ride to the Rapperswil Christmas Market, located by the lake and featuring more than 200 stalls and a medieval castle backdrop. There are plenty of cities to visit if you want to see more of Switzerland. We did this often during a fall trip to Switzerland and had an amazing experience.
If you haven’t decided when to visit Switzerland, I have broken down the pros and cons to traveling during every season in Switzerland to help you decide!
Getting Around Using Zurich’s Public Transportation
Zurich’s public transportation is one of the best in Europe – clean, always on time, and easy to navigate, even with kids in tow.
- Trams and Buses: The Zurich tram network (VBZ) connects all major markets, neighborhoods, and attractions. Markets like Sechseläutenplatz, Kongresshaus, and Werdmühleplatz are just a few stops apart.
- Zurich Card: Consider purchasing the Zurich Card, which gives you unlimited travel on all public transport (trams, buses, trains, and boats) within the city and nearby areas – plus discounts on museums and attractions. We use city cards like the Zurich card all the time. It’s a great option for families who want to pre-plan their spending, too!
- S-Bahn Trains: If you’re visiting nearby towns or day-tripping to the Rapperswil Christmas Market, the S-Bahn trains make it simple and scenic.
- Boats: During the holiday season, you can even hop on Lake Zurich ferries, some of which offer special Christmas rides.
- Family Tip: Kids under 6 ride free, and children up to 16 often receive discounted fares. Strollers are welcome on all forms of transportation, and stops are clearly marked with real-time digital schedules.
Pro Tip: Download the ZVV app for easy route planning, ticket purchases, and live updates – it’s available in English and extremely user-friendly.

What To Eat At The Zurich Christmas Markets
One of the most fun things to do during Christmas market season is to try all the food options that you wouldn’t necessarily get at home. Every country has their own local options, so make a list and be sure to check them off as you tour the market stalls.
You can’t go wrong with these festive Swiss favorites:
- Raclette – melted cheese over potatoes
- Bratwurst – hearty sausage usually served with bread and mustard
- Churros or crêpes – while not specific to Switzerland, this is a kid favorite
- Glühwein – mulled wine for adults. It’s practically a must have! We didn’t love the mug options in Zurich, but it was still fun to experience.
- Hot chocolate – thick, rich, and often topped with whipped cream
- Candied almonds and gingerbread cookies – great for snacking as you explore, or even for bringing home as gifts
What to Wear to the Zurich Christmas Markets
Zurich in December is cold, with average temperatures ranging from 28°F to 40°F (-2°C to 5°C). It was tricky planning our outfits, especially since we live in Florida where the kind of winter weather we were experiencing doesn’t exist. However, we made it work, and I am very happy with everything we brought.
The complete guide to packing for Europe in the winter has everything you need to know, but a few highlights include all the musts for comfort + layering:
- Warm coat or parka
- Waterproof boots with good grip
- Thermal socks
- Hat, scarf, and gloves
- Base layers for kids
- Optional: hand warmers and rain gear
Where To Stay in Zurich
For easy access to multiple markets, stay near the Zurich Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) or Old Town (Altstadt).
Some family-friendly hotel options include:
- Hotel Glockenhof Zurich – central and modern
- Hotel St. Gotthard – steps from Bahnhofstrasse and the main station
- Hotel NiMo – trendy, family-friendly, and close to tram lines. This is where we stayed!

Tips for Families Visiting Zurich’s Christmas Markets
Exploring the Zurich Christmas Markets as a family is an amazing experience. Having visited over 20 markets during one trip, we really loved our time in Switzerland and can’t wait to go back.
These few things are really helpful to know prior to your travels, but the biggest thing to consider is how does your family travel best.
- Visit early in the day to avoid crowds, especially with little ones. BUT don’t skip the evening activities. The sun sets earlier, so this isn’t too difficult, but make sure to see the Christmas markets during the day and at night.
- Bring cash, as most stalls will not accept a credit card.
- Try the children’s workshops often available at larger markets (look for candle-dipping or cookie decorating).
- Use Zurich’s trams – markets are easily connected and fun for kids to ride. The Zurich public transportation system is effective and inexpensive.
- Book accommodations early, especially for weekends in December.
If I haven’t said it enough, Switzerland is one of the most charming places I have ever been, and visiting during Christmas makes it even more special. Zurich’s Christmas markets are some of the most beautiful in Europe, offering a mix of tradition, elegance, and family fun.
Whether you’re ice skating by the lake, sipping hot chocolate under twinkling lights, or listening to a children’s choir sing carols from the Singing Christmas Tree, you’ll find holiday spirit at every turn.
From cozy markets in Old Town next to historic buildings to dazzling lakefront settings like Kongresshaus Zürich, Zurich delivers a Christmas experience your family will never forget.
