2016 Travel Planning in the USA

2016 travel

I posted a travel wish list last April and I can’t believe how much our plans changed within the last few months. Our big plan was to go to Tokyo for our anniversary, but when Dave had to have surgery, those travel plans changed slightly since he couldn’t spend several days walking around. Thankfully, that was also around the same time as getting the Southwest Companion Pass (which you can read more about here!) and we decided to make this year the year of #VolpesInTheUSA.

There are so many areas of our own country that we have yet to see, so we are ready to take on the touristy places and hole in the wall locations in America. We started this in December, but we plan on really making progress over the next 12 months. Thanks to Southwest flying to locations all around the country, Dave’s love for driving, and long weekends!

I am looking forward to building out some weekend city guides while we venture to new places. It doesn’t hurt that so many of these places are on my 101 in 1001 list! I would love suggestions (extra points for blog posts!) for the places we plan on going, and trips we have booked. Also, if you are anywhere near the places we are going, let me know- I would love to get some blates mixed in with our trips!

  • We are heading to New Orleans for my 25th birthday (AH!). I am so excited to see a new place, with one of my greatest friends, and our guys!

  • Austin, Texas for SXSW. This is a work trip, and after last years experience I will likely be exhausted each night after talking to groups of the 100,000+ people present BUT Austin is one of my favorite cities ever. So I will be sure to enjoy the walk back to the hotel room every night
  • Seattle here we come! I am SO excited to have this trip booked- I have wanted to visit Seattle for so long, and we finally were able to find the time to get to the west coast.

  • We are heading to St. Louis for a quick weekend trip. This seems to be like a city that keeps popping up on my radar via blogging, Facebook, and social media. I decided that was a sign and booked a trip for us.

  • Mexico! Okay, so this one obviously isn’t in the USA, but it’s a quick flight and we are going for our 1st Anniversary.

Other places I would love to visit this year:

  • Portland, Maine
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Nashville
  • Charleston
  • Napa Valley
  • New Mexico (those hot air balloons!)
  • Salt Lake City

If you have any suggestions, please send them my way!

  • Megan

Yessssss! I have a post similar to this planned for next month but none of our locations overlap exceeeeptttt Charleston which NEEDS TO HAPPEN! I can’t wait to hear all about your travels and you will love Seattle! Its the best. seriously look into those treehouse bedrooms! Can’t wait to see you next week!

  • Jacquelyn @ Lowcountry Mama

Definitely let me know if you decide to head this way! I really want to go to New Orleans soon. I also want to travel the U.S. so bad. We debated buying an RV and doing that for a year but not sure if that will happen haha. There’s so much to see here and I love the idea of just being able to drive everywhere instead of fly.

  • Meg Doherty

COME ON, CHARLESTON!! All of these trips sound so amazing, and I am so excited to start working on our Southwest card. We’ve found so many bills that we can transfer to pay with a credit card. My only question about it is, as soon as you get companion status, you keep that for 365 days, right? It’s not like if we don’t get it until November, we only keep it for the rest of 2016 (aka a month), right?

    • Macy Volpe

Trust me, it WILL happen this year!! If you got companion in November of this year, you would get it for the remainder of 2016 PLUS ALL of 2017! So even better would be to get it like June of this year so you have it for a year and a half!!

  • Annie

You’re going to have a busy year, girl! But I love this so much. You seriously should post a guide on how you travel so much! I would love to read about that!

  • makeupHER

This is such a great list of places girl! New Orleans is one of my favorite cities, I have a post from my time there, we skipped out on the whole Bourbon St. thing, but I love the energy of that city and the food is to die for!!! You can find my post by searching New Orleans ;)!

    • Macy Volpe

I am so excited to hear that you enjoyed New Orleans! We probably won’t do bourbon street for more than one night because there are so many things to do! I will absolutely look up and save your post 🙂

  • Ashley @ Wandering Weekenders

Austin really is such a fun city, and it has some of the best food! You have to eat some Mexican and BBQ while you’re there! Y’all are going to have such a good time in NOLA for your birthday too, and it’s another city with fantastic food! I have a few blog posts about what all we did when we visited in September, and I have a huge restaurant list from my boss who used to live there.
Please try to go to the Balloon Festival in New Mexico this year! We booked our hotel room already and I can’t wait to book our flights. It would be so awesome if we could meet up there!
I seriously can’t wait to hear about all of your travels! Southwest really is the best!

    • Macy Volpe

Oh my gosh yes it does! I am obsessed with Torchys Tacos, seriously I will go there at least once everyday that we are there!
I LOVE all of your posts about NOLA, there are so many things on my to-do list because of you 😉
Oh my goodness, what dates will you be in New Mexico? I am determined to make a metope happen!!

      • Ashley @ Wandering Weekenders

Torchys is seriously the best! They’ve started opening them all around Houston, and every single one is always packed! If you haven’t had the Trailer Park and made it Trashy yet, definitely give it a try! It’s my favorite taco!
And we’ll be in New Mexico September 30-October 2. We still have to book our flights, but I wanted to get our hotel room as quickly as possible because that’s the first weekend of the balloon festival.

  • Emelia @ Dream Big & Buy the S

These all sound fun. Our friend is stationed in New Orleans and while he isn’t a fan of living there full time right now he says it’s a great place. I’ve heard amazing things about Austin too. I really want to go to Napa. I suggest Pittsburgh so I can come down and meet you…haha, but if not that– Vegas for sure. I LOVE it there (and have some blog posts about it) haha

    • Macy Volpe

That is so nice to hear! I want to do a lot of activities in New Orleans besides just going out at night. I absolutely love Austin, it’s such an awesome city. My (soon-to-be) sister-in-law goes to PITT and we want to visit her when it gets warm again, I will let you know when we are there! This is going to sound crazy, but I am not a Vegas fan. I went for the first time a few months after I turned 21 and had a blast, but didn’t have the feeling that I wanted to go back…but then I have went at least 5 times for work and typically stay for 5+ days. It just exhausts me haha. But I am determined to go back one more time for fun because I didn’t visit old Vegas!

  • Lindsay

Come visit SLC in September for the most amazing fall leaves, best biking, and fun hiking. If you want to make it a ski trip, come Jan-March 🙂
